Looks OK on a .375 H&H case...

Have a brace with a set of bits that I inherited from my grandpa - one of the bits that looks just like that, right down the red on the square end of the shank.
Doubt I'm ever going to use it again, but damned if I'll ever let it go... some good memories of him showing me how to use it.

It's meant for wood. Looks like someone tried to use it on metal.
Even brass will ruin the cutting edges.
Those countersink bits used to be fairly common in just about any hardware store up to 50 years ago and the advent of hand held electric drills. It's not uncommon to find them with the square clamping section cut off and turned/filed down to fit into a 3/8 or 10mm chuck.
Sometimes you will see them with wooden handles as well.
Nice piece of history. Good of you to post it. Sort of like showing an old dial type phone to a ten year old today, for many.

My Father had a large number of wood bits and chamfering bits with those tapered square drives, as stated,
they fit into a hand "Brace" I believe I may still have these with stored items from my Father's shop after he
passed away. Dave.
