I have a "mystery" Mauser bayonet....(unfortunately, no camera).

It outwardly looks like a Kar98 bayo (looks the same size, a little pointier than my Yugo), but is a fraction of an inch (can't tell by looking) too small to fit any of my Mausers.

It has on the blade:

S/185 (on one side of the blade) and;

5725
i (on the other).....

Anyone have any idea what it is for ???

Is there a notich in the blade just where it meets the handel? Also what are the grips made of? It could be the Spanish knock off.

The S/185 is a german maufacturers makers code,if the serial# is on the riccasso it is correct for a german piece,if serial # was on crossguard it would be a post war re-work bayo. There should be a marking for year it was produced on the spine of the blade(36,37 etc.)or a letter after the S/185,a G or K.I,m not sure why it won't fit your rifle's.

Bayonet

Is there any damage to the back of the bayonet (Pommel), like marks where it may have been struck with something? Did you try to fit it to the rifle with the cleaning rod?

Thanks guys !!

There is no damage on the pommel.

There is a small 36 on the spine.

I have tried to fit this bayo on a Yugo Kar98k re-work, and a Norwegian 30-06 Kar98k.

No joy with either.

I can see (barely) that the groove for the bayo lug is slightly smaller than on my Yugo bayo.....

Sounds like a German bayonet for the k98 rifle, "36" represents 1936, S/185 is the wartime code manufacturer, the other number is the serial. Nice to find an early bayonet!

yes, thats what i thought.

what i think you have is a yugo rework german made bayo, which has tahen some damage maybe, hence why it wont fit onto the bayo lug. sounds weird it wont fit.
