looks like a bit of plastic deformation. Does anything butt up against that area that would put that 45deg angle pattern on it. It's showing both ano wear, and some depression (deformation) which illustrates something being pressed onto that area, as bear in mind this is aluminum not steel, and deformation happens pretty easily with little force. Doesn't look like a crack or any crack propagation.
You might be correct. Its the exact spot where the edge of the BCM MCMR handguard touches the surface now I look carefully. I tapped it into pace with a rubber mallet slowly, as it was tight. Definitely didnt smash it, but its very possible this is mild deformation due to installing the handguard.
Glad it's sorted. Aluminum will deform like that, and since it's so little shouldn't cause any issues.
Why do people do this? Post a question...find the answer...and then delete everything. Is it done specifically to prevent others from learning something that might be useful? Or is the original question so silly as to be embarrassing?
The problem was 'serious' and I over-reacted to what I thought it was, I dont want to cause panic with the original post now knowing its specifically not what I thought it was.

The point is that a question was raised, and it's almost inconceivable that no other shooters would ever run up against the same issue. This is one of the main reasons many members visit CGN regularly. Not just to use the EE, or to argue about trivia, or make extravagant claims about their marksmanship skills...although all of those seem to be legitimate reasons for many folks...but to learn and help others learn. Leaving posts in place, complete with questions and answers intact, increases the value of the forum for everyone.
