In my herd i have one caliber that is just above average the 44 mag, this one is a 29-10 S&W, one keeper of my herd, for history and performance... JP.

6.5 for the majority of filming, a couple perspective shots with the 8 3/8 barrel for visual impact (plus the aforementioned poster). In the later movies they also used a 41 Mag as the first movie made the 6.5 29 so popular they were hard to find. (There's a couple blogs and have been numerous gun magazine stories about it, one assumes the movie armorer would know) I recall a lot of 29's for sale with a half dozen rounds through them. It was a lot more cartridge than most people were expecting. Silhouette competition and handgun hunting really put the cartridge on the map, though. Also showed up the weaknesses in the S&W handguns for that sport. - dan

Just was on the S&W site and got that...

Frought with errors. There were no 6" versions at time of original movie, only 6.5" . Milius wanted a 4", but none were available. The only 8 3/8" barrel model used was for a promotional poster.

So the real Dirty Harry 44 mag used in the movies is the 6.5... JP.

I've owned a number of .44s over the years. The Dan Wesson was easily the most accurate, but due to it's long barrel my least favorite. A nickel plated no dash 6.5" M-29 was the slickest, but the .45/8" SA Rugers, first a Super Blackhawk, then a Vaquero were my preference for wilderness ATC applications, although dehorning is required to prevent bruises and a bit of blood loss. The rubber and wood inlay grips Ruger used on the SRH, made shooting heavy loads much more punishing IMHO, its like the gun can take a run at you. The original Red Hawk is the most comfortable .44 I've shot, but the hammer link hook would unhook under heavy recoil, so I had to drop a grain of powder so the gun was reliable.

Carmel, your M-29-10 is a fine gun. I'm pleased to see that after a 45 year absence S&W saw fit to return the diamond around the grip panel screw. If it were mine, I'd consider it a keeper as well.
