I've been talking to Jerry at Mystic and he says they can make a run of barrels for the Norc M305 or Springfield M1A in 260 rem or 6.5 creedmoor provided there's enough interest. I'm interested in at least one.

Anymore takers? More folks we have on this, more likely we can get this done.

Cheers,
Wes

I'm aware there are a few others interested but I seem to have been the only one to have Pmed Jerry about it, this thread was his recommendation...

Everyone else just blew their allowance on the Wolverine M14 kits.

To each their own, I'd rather buy a barrel and worry about tweaks later. There will always be parts kits from somewhere maybe not USGI or whatever Wolverine was selling but a run of custom barrels is much harder to get. Just my humble opinion though.

These kits provided a lot of us with more value than a run of custom barrels and may never be seen again although I get where you are coming from.

The barrel on the M14 type rifles from China isn't the weakest part - in fact some tweaked norcs shoot rather well. My LRB M25 had a match grade barrel but it was the overall fitting together of the parts that made the biggest difference. Finally, the real key to squeezing accuracy out of a M14 type rifle is in the attention to crafting a handload that particular rifle likes.

I have a local machinist with a CNC machine who is willing to do M14 contours.

I have a barrel maker who will sell me uncontoured barrels for around $450 taxes paid etc. (Pick your calibre and twist)

I just blew all my available funds on parts kits. Otherwise I'd be fast tracking a custom barrel......

I'm going to sitting down with the machinist, to hand over drawings and a couple barrels (so he can make a data file) in th coming weeks. After that it's just a matter of figuring out cost for machine time.

If the project seems like it's a go, I would need to order custom pull through reamers and some extra tooling.

IF (great big if) this all pans out, My plan is to offer custom barrel installs. 243 or 6xc, 7-08, 6.5 something or other & 338 federal. I believe a 358 is possible, but my barrel maker thinks the barrel wall would be too thin after the gas system..... he's probably right!

Once I have a firm price from the machinist, I was going to gauge interest on the board and see if it's even worth my while. Considering it would be $300 Us per reamer, I would need at least 10 barrels in each chambering to make the reamer purchase worthwhile.....

Off the cuff, I would estimate the cost per barrel installed would be $1100-$1250..... and you would need a US thread gas lock and castle nut....

Now let's be serious...... would anybody really be interested at that price point?

Depending if that $1200 includes a tune up from you, then you have my interest. I got no issues supplying a rifle as we've talked about by email but for the price you are talking about ($1800 or so all in) I could buy myself a very nice bolt gun or tweak the hell out of a stock M305... Not trying to cheat you out of honest coin but damn that's awful steep for a new barrel.

Yes sir, it is.

Which is why the market isn't flooded with M1A's in 243 or 260.

If a fella was doing a run of 200+ barrels the price would come down considerably.

Jerry/Mystic and I tried to get M14/M1A barrels made by Mcgowan a few years back...... I still have a bad taste in my mouth over that waste of my time.
I did a lot of leg work and hours and hours of drawings for the machinists at Mcgowan and it just never happened. A whole lot of customers were very disappointed and let down by the whole fiasco. I blame Mcgowan , not jerry, so hopefully this time around the whole deal is on some solid footing.

I'll believe it when i see it but i'm only interested in an m14 barrel in .338 federal

John, we have discussed this stuff privately but I have posted already..... 1000.00 cash to the first canadian business who can give me a medium contour, 19 inch finished , short chambered .338 federal M14 barrel. I can finish ream the chamber to my specs and the standard M14 usgi spec gas port size is what i'd want.
not everyone can do the finishing steps, but as you know, I do have a full service m14 shop of my own, it's just not open to the public hehehe

is the 338 Federal any good? I like the idea since I've got lots of 308 brass kicking around and being able to run say a 243, my dad's 308 and a heavy caliber for moose or a bush gun sounds great!

I'm pretty confident that I will build at least one 338 federal at some point..... for myself if nothing else!

I tried to have a Norinco 22" bbl re-bored to 338 1:10 twist. Long story short, it didn't work.... or I should say, it didn't work out very well.....

hey at least yer trying right? :D

My milling machine is getting moved to the new house in the next month i think and then the electrician to get my vfd hooked up. I got an ear on an auction coming up with a real nice lathe set up so putting some pennies away for that.
Once i got the lathe in the shop..... along with the mill, I'll make me that barrel one way or another LOLZ
