want to buy a nef 45/70 handi rifle 22 inch barrel. price is good, SIR $270. will use occasionally for shooting at paper and possibly hunting. what is recoil like? should i stay away from it? spend more money and move on? i have heard that they make this firearm as a hunter version with a long octagon barrel. if this is true, were could i get more info about it. thanks

Those H&R single shots seem well liked. I would say the prohibitive thing is the cost of ammo. 45/70 by the box is pricey I think. I would search for some reviews of the model. I have considered that route for a nice centre fire too. Could be a nice, inexpensive target/deer gun. I would think of 308, and use recent surplus 7.62x51 for plinking myself. Might save on ammo too.

Not really that costly.

I'm not a fan of the NEF or HR rifles. In fact, you couldn't pay me to own one. I think they're ugly and cheap. That being said, I've never shot one and can't comment on whether or not they're a robust action or not.
 
I don't own one but on a site I frequent (www.greyberdoutdoors.com a real active NEF group) there are lots that do. it will go from mild to wild. a lot fill the bolt hole in the stock with lead and add a good recoil pad. They day most factory loads are not too bad for recoil.

Go to www.hr1871.com and you will find the buffalo classic (32" octagonal)lots of guys shot that too. Handis are a decent gun for the money, can be a bit of work to get to shoot right but since the Marlin takeover a few years back the consistancy has much better.
 
I've owned a .223, .243, 25-06 and a 30 06 The H&R'S with the laminated stock are nicer. The nef's aren't the nicest to look at. They are heavy (I think) They are a soild rifle for the money. Mine were all quite accurate. Outside of owning a 45/70 for an extra $30.00 I would buy a stevens 200. They are chambered up to a .300 mag I believe. Take care.

I have a Handi-Rifle in .223 and I like it a lot. To my tastes, it isn't quite ugly, but utilitarian, certainly, and I would like a wooden stock less than mine's synthetic. It certainly lives up to it's name, being very light, compact, and simple. But I would wonder, too, about the recoil with such a light rifle in a larger calibre.
 
I have one in 45-70 and yes it does recoil a lot. Not so much on the shoulder, but the barrel kicks up. I find it quite accurate though, I had 3 shots cloverleafing each other. Its does make a great bush rifle for deer to Moose.
 
I have 2 chambered in 45/70 one a 22" barrel handi and the other a 32" Buffalo classic.
I shoot 350 grainers in the 22" barrel speer jacketed and 405 lead in the Buffalo.
The 22: handy rifle loades with H-322 will group under an inch a 50 yards and just over 1 1/2 at 100y

Great little rifles. Very versitile too. I make my own shot loads for it to shoot grouse while deer hunting. (basic .410 wad, pistol powder and shot. .458 gas check provides overshot wad) Factory rem 405 gr loads seem to work well with mild recoil. Watch out when you open it to unload. An unfired .45-70 round will knock your front teeth out when ejected. (not really but it hurts like h---) Williams makes a nice peep to upgrade the sights too. Good gun, good price and will kill ANYTHING within 100 yards in North America. What's not to like?
