Well, I think I decided against getting an XCR. I wanted something I could shoot .223/5.56 and 7.62x39 but on doing the math I just don't think it's worth it. Why spend almost 3K on an XCR (with converstion) when I can spend less and get both an sks (or CZ) and buy a mini 14 (or something)...

So... since I want (correction: need) something that will shoot oodles of 7.62x39 crate ammo, what do I get?

SKS? or CZ 858?

I've never compaired them in person. I have only fired an SKS. What's the consensus on the pro/cons between the two? Are they essentially the same? Any recommendations on aquiring either variant would also be great.

Oh wise CGNers, I need your wisdom. Forgive my noobness.

Edit; if you have the extra cash - buy both :)

The CZ costs more, and MAY be more accurate, but not by much. After 3 SKS purchases, I can't justify owning an 858. Two of my SKS's shoot up to 3 inch groupings at 100 yards with iron sights using the cheap surplus ammo. I'm not sure how much better an 858 can do. I don't think the 858 has anything on the SKS in terms of build quality or ease of maintenance, and the 1952 and up SKS have chrome-lined barrels.

Ya i coooould probably afford both but i would rather get one for the short term. I have several other things on my gun list that need buying.

Dylan, hit up a few gunstores and handle both if you can. The 858 is a little more badass AK-like, and the SKS is a very cool battle rifle. I would recommend going russian for an SKS, they are the best, but my unissued chinese military isnt far behind. The 858 has ergonomics over the SKS, but is more expensive. It all comes down to personal preference really. I predict you will follow the same path as most everyone else: buy one to get into 7.62x39, get violently addicted, and buy more...and more...and more... I never understood how some people owned 5 or 6 SKS's and an 858 or 2, I'm now on my second SKS, looking to add another and an 858 when funds allow. Choose which one you like best and go from there. Theres alot of great info on both around the site to help you choose. Good luck with your search and have fun!

right on. I guess what I'm trying to find out is if there are any major snags between the two models. I could deff see myself having both down the road.

Get the SKS. It will give you extra cash to buy a crate of ammo, and still allow extra dollars towards another rifle. The 858 looks cool, but so does a nice TAPCO stock conversion.

Can either take 10 rnd mags? Anybody have both and can comment on reliability, cleaning, mounting optics, etc.? Asking an SKS owner if I should get one is like asking a crack head if he wants more. ;)

5 rounds for non restricted centerfire.

for the SKS, there are two types of pinning. avoid the one with the circular alluminum disk. also, look for an sks that is blued and not re-painted black.

I would go with the SKS....I don't think the extra bucks you would spend on a 858 really worth it since the performance of thoses two rifles are very similar

I vote 858 or for a couple hundred bucks more both. There is no functional difference between the two. However if it was around before 1998 it would be prohibited. So you can enjoy a carbine that if the liberals had their way (or get their way) would have been denied.

I would love to be able to plink with an FN Fal again, but I had sold mine back in 1997 and will probably never be allowed to own one again.:(
