N00b question: CZ858 or SKS?

My vote goes to the 858.The reason for me is i find it alot lighter and easier to handle on those long hikes.

speaking about weight , try carrying a FN C1A1 fully loaded.

i like both the SKS and VZ58. what else a RR mod suppose to say ?

I have owned four or perhaps five SKS' and really like them ( go for the Russian over the Chinese IMO ) but I am down to one now as a few months ago I bought a CZ858 ( non restricted version with folding stock ) and I prefer shooting it over the SKS so much that the one remaining SKS doesn't see daylight anymore.

Get both. Wish you were near me I'd take you out to shoot both of them.

Well, I think I decided against getting an XCR. I wanted something I could shoot .223/5.56 and 7.62x39 but on doing the math I just don't think it's worth it. Why spend almost 3K on an XCR (with converstion) when I can spend less and get both an sks (or CZ) and buy a mini 14 (or something)...

So... since I want (correction: need) something that will shoot oodles of 7.62x39 crate ammo, what do I get?

SKS? or CZ 858?

I've never compaired them in person. I have only fired an SKS. What's the consensus on the pro/cons between the two? Are they essentially the same? Any recommendations on aquiring either variant would also be great.

Oh wise CGNers, I need your wisdom. Forgive my noobness.

I love SKS. Russian SKS, of course (well, I am biased, lol). I shot both CZ and SKS - SKS all the way as far as shooting pleasure is concerned. As for maintenance - I didn't own CZ, so, don't know. SKS cleaning is addicting and is my Sunday morning stress relief kinda business, lol. That said, if you have RPAL I would buy SKS and Norinco CQ 5.56 M4. Norc costs as much as CZ but you cannot compare between two accuracy wise.

Just one noob to another, lol :)

I like my SKS more than my buddy's CZ. They're both as accurate as each other, and I'd even put my SKS as being more accurate, although it might just be my impression as he doesn't do much shooting past 50 yards, he uses his CZ as more of a defensive rifle and fires more offhand stuff while I do some bench shooting at 200-300 yards. My SKS is just as reliable, I might say even more as it's simpler with less moving parts and stuff. I put a stock shim to make the SKS fit me, and I find it more comfortable than the CZ. SKS is cheaper, all you're really getting with the CZ is detachable magazines, IMO.

This is all based on opinions and things I've seen, really. Try them both out and see which one you like best, but I think the SKS is a better choice for a few good reasons above that aren't opinions.

I would have to say the vz58 is a simpler design.
The trigger parts(all 3? of them), the gas piston is one solid piece(sks has 2 pieces) and easily removed(no fumbling with that lever thing) Receiver cover & upper hand guard are held in place by a simple pin(again, no moving a lever to certain angle)

I think the VZ/CZ has more to offer in looks and ergonomics. The pistol grip makes a world of difference when it comes to handling, plus, come on, it looks like an AK. piss off a liberal, buy a gun!

i have both and my d model sks hasent left the barn in over 2 years the cz is lighter easyer to clean (not by much) fit and finish is better with better ergonomics

Don't you love that creepy SKS trigger? Free floating in the beginning, then some resistance and you think it will break now, then it's like bending some old leaf spring and all of a sudden that sucker goes off.

id say buy both too

but if you're gonna get only one, definitly buy the cz
beside the fact is a better performing easier to clean gun with better ergonomics its basically a non-restricted AK that shoots better and is built better

A lot of good points here, but you should get both. I have both and they shoot almost the same but the cz858 shoots a little more accurate, is half the length, 1/4 of the weight, has four 30 round mags yet both are durable as hell and shoot equal devasting power of the 7.62x39mm. The sks is probably the best bang for your buck in terms of military type rifles, the cz858 is a close second. After them come all the .223 black rifles just due to their cost. A few rifles I own am willing to trade and sell for the right price, but the sks and cz858 will always stay in my cabinet.

It's a great rifle to see if yourself or your friends have a flinch from Magnum rifles. Usually just Before it goes off they will drop the barrel just a touch. :D

My vote is get both...mind you I have never heard of an SKS having gremlins like the 858.
Just do yourself a favor and avoid blinging them up with cheap "tacool" accessories.

I found the SKS overly heavy in relation to it's caliber. To me, the sks felt about as heavy and handy as my M14, but with "half" the power.

The cz858 is lighter, handles better, has detachable mags, is very simple to tear down, and there is huge Canadian aftermarket support for it. I'm not sure what else you could ask for in a rifle under $1000.

I'm into my 858 for about $1500 now, $750 for the rifle, $700 for the optic, and some NEA parts.

How are they in recoil compared to each other? What about compared to a .223 or .30-06? I was thinking of putting a few SKS's away for my kids.
