N00B question: how many pistol magazines do I need?

Buy as many good quality mags as you can afford. When at the range, it is nice to load up 10-15 mags and shoot for awhile without having to reload.

10 to 15 mags without reloading! I can't afford to have that much fun.:)
I like to make a morning out of it.
Shoot a mag, pick up brass, check target, refill clip, and repeat.

I generally use a guideline I heard years ago: 3 sets. One set new in the wrap, one set tested and set aside for serious use, either in competition or defense or whatever, and one for training.

So if you use, say, 3 mags to train with, you probably want to keep 9-10 mags for that gun on hand.

If you compete and require 6 mags, say, for competition, I'd keep adding to the collection until I had 18 or 20.

But I start at 6 and work up from there. IMO 6 is the minimum to feel comfortable, for me at least.

Unless you're talking 1911 mags, in which I measure it the way I measure brass...in pounds.

How many rounds do you like to shoot per session? How often do you feel like reloading per session? It's good to have lots of mags...sometimes they break, or get broken or worn out. Some dark day they may be hard to get, and not just expensive. Another thing about having lots of mags is that you can load them the day before going to the range and save time on the firing line.

I have 10 each for my M&Ps...8 for my .22 Ruger...I have 2 not-so-good mags for my Sig, which I don't plan to shoot a lot and 3 good ones. I plan to pick up a couple more good ones for the Sig. I have 5 good mags for my 1911 and a bunch of not-so-good ones...but I don't shoot my 1911 that much either.

I like 3 to 4 mags (for range use, no competitions). It's nice having a bunch of mags already loaded for you to shoot at the range, but there gets a point where it's not worth it to spend that much on extra mags, let alone carrying them around with you. I have no need for 10 mags. To each their own. There are no rules, you buy and bring as many as you want, your choice.

depends on your projected level of use. i like to keep 2-3 for just punching paper. if you ever want to compete...i would say 6 is good, but i use a stripper mag that i load one and keep in the rear of my belt (9 rounds)

Just wondering, for instance, if you had an HK45 and the mags were around $65 each, how many mags would you buy?

Personally...initially probably 4. I would work up to ten over a couple of years.

A good supply of mags is critical IMO...they are disposable and wear out over time. Consequently you need to factor that cost in when considering a pistol.

You need at least 5, because that's how many will fit a box of ammo, and that's how much you can comfortably carry with mag holders on a belt when you have a pistol holstered. Once you got 5, you wait for them to go on sale and then get more lololololololololol
