Hey guys,

What's the thing hanging on the top of the 416 in this pic? Is it some sort of laser / flashlight??

Insight Technology AN/PEQ-2A or 2B laser/IR-pointer. Practically unobtainable here and in the high $1500's in the US.

I haven't looked into it much - but what laser options are available here for Ar15s ? What are the top players in this industry?

I see Marstar has some for $39.99.. I'm sure they're milspec quality :p

That is a laser/IR dot aiming unit - milspec, runs on 2 AA batts. Can't remember the manu but they are made in the USA.

Has a switch to go to the grip or forestock.

Nice unit, but you need NVG to see the dot if you are using the IR dot mode.

Cheers, Carl

I've been looking around for one of those for quite some time. The US DOS has them tightly regulated. I'm not familiar with Marstar lasers but the price point would indicate some low-quality Asian reproduction with limited functionality.

is it true that if you remove a safety switch on them you can physically blind someone with it:confused:
i could be mistaken though:redface:

IIRC the paq-2 has a "safe" lower powered mode for use on exercises, and a "not quite so safe" mode for operational use. Perhaps one of the guys with some time in the sandbox under their belt could confirm or deny this.

So I guess the answer is probably yes...with the correct wattage, a laser can cause damage to one's vision.

Confirmed.
Lower power setting for training and the limiting block is unscrewed and turned around to allow higher output. This gives you a longer range and brighter beam, depending on the battery power.
Mine was removed as soon as it was mounted overseas. That model has a beam and flood option and the brightness can be adjusted as well. Focus can also be set wide or narrow on the flood light.
They are very dangerous to the human eye. Although, it really doesn't matter if you are pointing at the enemy's eyes or not, considering you are using it to mark a target so everyone can bring fire on it/him.
YMMV,
Hoddie.
