A lot of shooters love to say this.
It's only partly correct.
Given that Winchester, Remington, Ruger, Marlin, Browning and Savage all have marked their rifles' chamberings as either "cal." or "caliber," for decades now, calling a cartridge a "caliber," is not actually incorrect.
