Need Advice

I want to buy a Precision Rifle. Can anyone help me?
Also which action is best?

Here's what happens:
Threads are not merged
No stickies or FAQ's for commonly asked questions
n00bs pop up every week and ask the same questions
database is probably auto pruned so search becomes useless and most people don't want to search

Ian is right! Target Rifle means many things to many people.

Same thing in the Gunsmithing section. How do I become a Gunsmith pops up every week and the same answers from various members respond.

Which would you prefer? .308 or 30.06? in another section.

IMO, it's much easier to admin/mod a board that does not support huge databases, auto-prune every 6 months and let the n00bs ask the same questions every week. It does give them a chance to jump in on any forum and not be overwhelmed by the experts.
The bad is a lot of good knowledge threads get dumped and the good advise goes with it each time.

Conclusion:
Keeps the board more active with new blood. The experts get to have their say once in awhile. Dealers get to promote constantly. The n00bs feel like they have contributed something. The wise continue to learn and glean any nugget of truth here and there. Good marketing I suppose, but then I could have it totally wrong.

Ian Is Right

In the spirit of clearing up a few misconceptions.

What is Benchrest or BR?

Benchrest competition is to compete with a scoped rifle, either for score (ie shooting for 10 ring or center dot) or competing for the smallest average group size. It is shot anywhere from 50 yds (rimfire) through to 1000 yds (centerfire).

It can be rimfire or centerfire. It is shot with purpose built rifles whose only use is to punch paper. In fact they are useless for anything else. They don't make good field rifles, or casual plinking rifles.

It is shot off of a rest (front and rear), and there are time limits to complete your target. It is shot over wing flags to allow the competitors to gauge the wind.

The big issue I see for casual observers of the game of BR is the notion that BR is strickly an equipment race among other things (it isn't). I will grant you the equipment isn't something you will find at the local hunting store, but think of it this way, the equipment merely gets you on the playing field. Indeed a 1/4 moa rifle is required, but there is no black magic here, it is well known how to produce a 1/4 moa rifle and there are numerous smiths in Canada that can do this work. Once you have a rifle suitable for BR competition, it is up to you the shooter to read the wind and handle the rifle to beat your fellow competitor. Pretty much the same as every rifle discipline out there.

There are matches pretty much across the country, hopefully including the Maritimes this year.

Here is a link to the schedule I have compiled for the matches so far in 2010:
http://www.benchrest.ca/Schedule__Calendar_.html

I would urge anyone who has an interest in BR to attend a match, better yet bring a rifle and give it a go. Everyone started in the same place. In fact BR is noted for competitors helping their fellow competitor by lending rifles and freely giving the information required to run at the top. You won't find a friendlier bunch of accuracy enthusiasts anywhere, and we are more than happy to push newcomers down the slippery slope! :D

Check out the links in the sigline for even more information on BR.

Good Idea Ian
We also need a description of the components with suppliers (Canadian preferably) and perhaps several photos of each class showing the stock and action options.

As a long Range hunter I have always felt like a bit of an odd man out in the PR rifle section.
Not that the guys here aren't friendly (they are) and I certainly have learned a great deal about rifle precision here, its just that the focus of a BR or F-Class guy is very different.
Here we talk about accuracy not terminal ballistics.

If I head down to the Hunting and sporting section those guys are mainly hunters that not interested on long range shooting at all. If I bring up the subject of LR hunting down there I am greeted by a lot of misunderstanding and lectured about ethics which are measured by a different yardstick.

I am sure a pure tactical guy would be in the same boat. Nobody in either forum wants to discuss the intricacies of the ideal knee pads for improvised field position shooting, custom built shooting tripods or what have you.

I believe that guy is here, but we don't offer a discussion platform for them. I am quite sure many of your "what sniper rifle should I buy" questions are hunters that want to understand more about shooting a distance. I would like to see some form of a LR precision/Tactical discussion.

Curious as to your response

If you start a thread with something like " precision rifles as long range hunting tools" I'm sure you will get some good responses here.
You would be surprised at how many members here actually participate in long range hunting .
