Nanaimo hunter fined $17,000 for killing bighorn sheep

Times Colonist

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

A Nanaimo man has been ordered to pay more than $17,000 for killing three California bighorn mountain sheep and one white-tailed deer.

Walker Rook Addison, 38, pleaded guilty at Grand Forks provincial court in the B.C. Interior to four counts of hunting mountain sheep without a species licence, exceeding the annual bag limit for mountain sheep, hunting white-tailed deer without a licence and using licences which did not belong to him.

Addison was fined $400 and ordered to make a payment of $17,000 to the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund.

He was also ordered not to hunt for five years and to surrender the sheep and his crossbow.

Alright! Now that's more like it. Seems like fines in that range would help to prevent others from commiting that type of poaching. I'm surprised to not see a firearms restriction. The BC hunting regs lumps crossbows into the firearms catagory.

Poacher !

BUT ! if he was an indigenous canadian he would not have been prosecuted !
Would have neen nice iffn he was a yank - :D

Poaching it what it is. But lets look at a guy who kills out of season without a license etc. big fines lost rights some times jail time.. Now lets look at gang bangers killing people etc...in general criminals.

If you ask me there’s a trend and it seams the courts take a harder stance on a poacher rather than criminals. Yes we need to punish poachers but what about the rest of criminals.

Send em all to hard labour camps up north of Yellowknife somewhere. Poacher, gangbanger, whatever.

Good thing this guy was caught in BC & not Quebec... Or they'd have put him in charge of counting the damn sheep! (for real, a poacher out there got a contract to count the same type of animal he'd repeatedly been caught poaching... Makes ya wonder eh?)

"Nanaimo hunter" <-------- Every time a poacher is called a "hunter", real hunters get in trouble. Poaching is poaching. Don't call him a hunter and put his a$$ in jail with the rest of the thieves.
Shame on him.

Probably was a "hunter" until he crossed that line. We have to accept that the hunter's in general represent a cross section of society and we definately have more than our share of S.Heads.

He should never be aloud to hunt again. Take his firearms licence and give him some jail time. I bet he has been poaching for many years. Probably the only time he got caught out of 50 times hes done it. Thats a 2% chance of getting caught, Betcha he does it again.

So true and that s a stuff we do not agree at least the hunters ...

lol, big Ugly... How about in black tents, forced to wear pink coveralls & working on replacing all the highways in Saskatchewan?

Preferably with big ol iron ball & chains on their ankles.

So long as they're forced to be USEFUL for a change is the big issue...

I was thinking tents in the NWT would be particularly daunting a punishment for a criminal... Especially in winter.

;)

The poacher got off light. The $17,000 fine is small considering a guided hunt of bighorns would cost over $30K (not to mention that this guy killed three bighorns plus a white tail).

The most expensive part is not being able to hunt for five years!

I am happy that justice is served.

We've got our own problems. Keep your poachers down South and do with them what you please.

BUM couldn't be more right. I live in the south, but my heart is in the north as I spend a lot of time in the Yukon. I've quickly developed a dislike for the south ... you're a lucky man BUM and I'm with you. S'matter of fact I want to use criminals for target shooting....there goes another 3 Liberal points for discriminating against a minority....ohhh wait, I'm a white minority, WTF was I thinking about.

Up north definately has it's share of problems (poachers). They know they don't have to travel the hwy's, risking roadblocks to smuggle game home.
