Here are a few photos from our local rendezvous, this past weekend. Weather was a bit damp on Friday with a mild drizzle most of the day but improved considerably for Saturday and Sunday.

We had a total of 25 shots on the rifle trail, shooting at gongs like the ones above. The elephant, coyote and moose are actually shot from quite a bit to the right of the camera, with the 125 yd coyote and the 150 yd moose being an either or choice with 2 points for the moose and 1 point for the coyote. The coyote is about the size of a real animal.

we also had a squirrel target for guns of 40 cal and under, shot on the rifle range

the squirrel is branded on a piece of scrap wood, should you be wondering. I have a branding iron in that shape.

there was a small primitive camp

and also events for cartridge rifle at 100, 150 and 200 yds plus a mini cannon event using bench top model cannons

Looks like a great time was had by all! Nanaimo is much-loved in this house - we bought our first van from Starlight Autos down by the Buccaneer way back in 2004, and drove it home to Wooler ON.

BTW, please advise your kilt-wearing buddy to get down on his knees and hitch up the bottom edge of the kilt until it's level with the ground. That sets the correct wearing height for a man.

Is that a cannon on the table?!

We have a mini cannon shoot on Saturday night after the steak bbq supper. Target is an oil drum at 25 yards for 5 shots then 5 at 30 and 5 at 50 yards. I think we will start the targets farther out next year; the shooting was pretty accurate. The mini cannons are shot from the shooting benches and have a bore of 1" or less. Some are those excellent reproductions that Lever Arms was selling about 1 year ago while others are home made and lathe turned with threaded breaches. I will try to post some photos in the next day or so

Here are some of the guns starting with an ultra mini one;

and a couple of artillery pieces; one from Lever Arms and the other a machinist made Parot Rifle;

I threw that kilt on in a hurry and was having trouble getting it up high enough and fitting with the rest of the vestments haha it was the first time I'd put everything on so it will take some work to get it all figured.

Trust me though in regular attire with the kilt it's set at the correct height ;)

Cheers, McLean

that one is a citrus cannon for shooting oranges. The mini cannon shoot sort of evolved from the citrus cannon shoot which permitted only unfrozen oranges and light charges of powder or else you would "juice" the orange. The citrus cannons were bulky enough to be a nuisance packing to a rondy and seem to have faded away mostly. I will have to prompt its owner to post a photo of it in this thread

Would very much appreciate that and thanks for the effort. Always interested in pics of big things that go "Bang". And thank you for the "frozen orange" idea, I'm in the process of building a 2.7" caliber cannon at the moment. It will chamber pop cans but round oranges with a little paint on them will be much more authentic "looking".

Great photos mooncoon. We have been unsuccessful at kicking off a rendeszvous here (used to have them prior to a few key people passing away/moving away), got a couple of very minor shoots/trail walks in but that's been it lately. Family (kids' activities etc) and volunteer activities (oh yeah and work) tend to consume us these days, but seeing these events always spurs me on to push again. I know there is some interest in resurrecting our blackpowder chapter.

Fingers284, there is a guy here who built a civil war replica cannon that also shoots pop cans, filled with cement. I have helped him with it the past 2/3 years at our annual club open house (coming up again here in August). I don't have permission to post photos or I'd put a couple up. Usually they put them on the R&G website after the event but they are off now. It is a "BLAST" but boy does gunpowder disappear fast.

if you are using oranges, cut off the last 1/2" of your barrel (if you are using DOM), clean it up and take it to the grocery store with you as an orange guage. If anyone asks, just say that your wife is very fussy :>) I have heard that 1/2 tin of concrete is more accurate because it is closer to a round ball than an elongate can which tumbles in flight.

We fire the 1/2 sized Pepsi cans full of concrete. I never enquired why (just assumed it was what the owner had on hand). That could be why!

His is actually bored out of a massive chunk of round stock. Literally the same diameter as an original cannon, by all accounts and appearance. Apparently it was quite the feat for the local machine shop.
