Well Nugget decided to take a newbie out for a bear. Within two days of setting a bait they had it hit. Nathan went out the next night and caught some movement at thhe bait before he could get up to the tree stand.
At a mere 20yards a sow stepped out from behind the bait with Nathan laying flat on the ground. Then two cubs came out from behind the bait too!
Lucky for him he was downwind and they never found out he was there.
Friday Nathan and Dan went out with video camera in hand. They got to the bait but Nathans peg broke when he tried to get up in his stand.
So on the ground he is again, 25 yards from the bait.
Dan had a "climbing" rig so he went up another tree after the scent sticks were lit.
An hour and a half later all was still quiet until Nathan looked over his shoulder to see a bear 15 yards away, on it's hind legs standing up and chomping it's jaws. The boar wheeled around and circled them out of view. Once it caught the scent it came straight for the bait without hesitation.
With the bear quartering towards Nathan, he hit it with the 180gr bullet from his old 06 and lucky for him it decided to run away instead of straight for him.
He was found in some thick brush not far away and needed a follow up shot but Nathan got his bear.
A beautiful thick coat, nice crest and great claws. Length about 5' 3"
Congrats Nathan!
