Nature's Treasures and Casualties

My grandfather had one hit his car many moons ago, after getting the permission and permit he had it stuffed... Very nice little bird... After my grandfather passed away the bird was turned over to the government as per the contract he had to sign.... I Miss em both :-/

My grandfather about 30 years ago said an owl did the same thing. Forget what kind of owl it is but one night flew up and hit the side of his car. He bagged it the next day went to the MNR and asked for a permit. Something happend and he ended up putting the bag on the counter and pulled it out to show them he didn't shoot it or something.

Its been on the book shelf ever since.

I just thought he was real quiet! Pretty bird...

They are neat birds. I heard an owl calling after dark while standing on the deck outside recently up at the cabin. He was close out front. I tied to make mouse sounds and sure enough he flew right by in front of me and through the light shining from a halogen light. I estimated the wingspan in flight to be 12" to 14". I asked other cottagers about this owl and looked in the bird book. We guessed it to be a sawwhet and maybe a boreal. Thanks for the pic. It's nice to see one up close, too bad for the circumstances though.

Very Cute Lil owl. We had barn owls on the farm very small and cute.

A little off topic but I was ploughing a field one day and had dozens of purple martins flying around me nailing bugs as they came off the ground. One little fella didn't dodge quick enough and hit the hood. He fell stunned I thought so I stopped and picked him up. I held him in my hand for some time and he got a bit stronger so I set him on the steering wheel and he stayed there about 1/2 hr always remaining at the top of the wheel by shuffling sideways. Then he just dropped stone dead.
I actually felt awful about the Lil fella. It was kind of a amazing experience actually to see one up close.
