I received the cylinder stop part and with a little fitting the cylinder indexes well and locks up. When I place the hammer in half #### the cylinder is indexed a little too far. It is not from the part I replaced as it does it even with the stop removed. This is a new gun for me and have not shot it yet. Because the cylinder indexes properly I am worried if I file the hand to fix the half #### problem I will create a new one. How else could I fix this or should I just live with it as it is only used for loading anyway?

In the half #### hammer position the cylinder should be free to rotate (ie: not locked up by the bolt) the chamber that you are going to load first is supposed to be near the cut-out used to put on the cap, this is normal.
Most of my revolvers are half way between chambers in half #### position so that you can set the hammer down onto the safety pins.
 
The cylinder should go beyond index at the half ####.It should spin freely to load it.As long as its good at full ####.Watch the video ,How to load an 1851 on you tube.If the cylinder doesn't spin on the half #### the cylinder stop may too prominent.Are you able to arrange to get it to a smith?Dave.
 
I can turn the cylinder freely in half ####, the stop is not engaged. The hand however does prevent me from turning the cylinder counter clockwise if the hand engages a pawl it is not centered with a chamber lined up with the barrel. If this is normal I'll leave it alone. The cylinder stop fitting was a success but it took a few hours with tiny files and stones as I didn't want to take too much off and have things loose.
 
Totally normal not to be able to turn the cylinder "backwards" against the hand. Sounds like you did a good job replacing the hand so you are set to shoot.
 
I'm happy with the job. I didn't expect a drop in part but it took some work. Thanks everyone for the help. I can hardly wait to get out and try it out. I think it is the beginning of an addiction.
 
Well then it sounds perfect.Watch that video and get someone who has shot these before to help you load.Lots of info on the net.Some guys use rolling papers to make up premade loads,Kinda cool watch the vids on YouTube.Better be careful you'll end up lovin these guns.Skinny is a good guy to talk to.More experienced than me.Have fun,be safe.D
