one of the first 25 rifles brought into New Zealand in early 2012 at the time it had a trigger that wouldn't move until it had 5.6kg on it and wouldn't break until 7.6kg some sand paper and a bit of polishing brought it down to 4kg breaking (it came at a price later in the timeline).

at the end of March 2012 it arrived at work :)

after a 10 hour wait until i could get home i put a scope on and tried to go out the sight it in but the weather prevented me doing so :(

two weeks later..
first wallaby (it is full grown)
a little while later after discovering what load it liked it started producing results :)

the day before one of my week long hunting trips the locally built custom suppressor arrived

on the 19th of may my first Red deer stag ( Cervus elaphus scoticus)

the long weekend kit, back when it was easy to get.

August 2012 NEA's first goat

next one at 285m

4 months later (and a few more goats that weren't up to being photographed in between)

the next day Turkeys were up :)

In November a staged picture of 800 rounds
notice they don't have primers ;)
January 2013 a 5 day trip to the same location the stag was shot in a bit of a rush forgot the tent... managed to improvise though

a 1.5l coke bottle at 105m (IOR 2.5-10X42 at 10X)

some fresh tracks

by this time some defects in the other NEAs had become known within a range of the serial numbers mine was outside this range so thought i had missed out, 10 months and it was my turn :)
fortunately digits very prompt with fixing issues and a replacement bolt was sent and waiting for me when i returned a few days later. No i didnt cancel the trip when the bolt broke a lug instead i put the .22 kit in and ran that for the next few days getting some 38 possums (cat sized furry tree and bird eating introduced pest marsupial.)
the rifle at this point was at a estimated 1400 rounds fired (not including .22lr) and has settled nicely to be the most accurate rifle i have.

this was the one off i haven't quite managed to do it again the average group is 16mm

around February this year the effect of my polishing the trigger earlier came back to haunt me with this

i had polished through the hard facing and with a worn disconnecter this allowed for runaway firing if i held the trigger just right
replacement trigger parts were ordered the same day,

May this year...
week long hunting trip :)

and on the 19th Red deer number 2 ( mature female measured 2.4m nose to tail and 112cm high at the shoulder or about 30-40% bigger than the spiker i got the year before) like the stag shot at 90m she made it 30m into the bush (lung shot) with it being just on dusk it took me two attempts and a hour and a half to locate her, only to find after dressing her that i could only just lift her but couldn't carry her out so had no choice but to drag her back out slide her up the boat oars and down a log into the boat i brought her home like that and skinned and processed her on the porch.

salted the skin then sent it to be tanned like the spikers skin, Although the reds are common and classed as a pest i have a respect for deer that i don't feel towards other animals i hunt. I guess i respect the fact they have evolved and survived being hunted by man since we learned we could eat them if we could catch them and they're are still here. For that reason and the fact i only kill one or two deer a year as the freezer gets empty (no i don't eat it all the time pretty much only for special occasions.) i get every skin tanned professionally.

i had a brief foray into a 18" upper for the past 2 months but when i put it to the chronograph found the extra length only gave a average of 55fps on the 60gr projectiles i run took it for a goat and wallaby hunt anyway
this was the first 3 shots

the next day at 500 yards (10 rounds)

Wow, great post! We are all jealous of you. I was using my 10.5" NEA this weekend at a CQB match and it started doubling. I sent an email to NEA informing them of this and requesting a new trigger group. Let's see what happens.

I'm most impressed with the accuracy of them. used the same load in the 14.5 and 18" uppers and both gave 16mm 5 and 10 round groups going to try and get the importer to send me a 12.5" upper to see if i can apply that level of accuracy with the same load to all of them :)

load is:
Hornady 60grSp, Vmax or Noslar ballistic tip
ex military brass (marked L17A2 RG07) or Hornady brass and increase the powder to 25.2gr (with a suppressor)
24.8gr ADI 2206H (Hodgdon H4895)
CCI No.400 small rifle primer.

the build and fit quality on them has noticeably improved over the past 18 months the current ones you can't get a .054mm feeler gauge in between the upper and lower receivers and the finish on both parts match all they need now is a lighter trigger and they'll have a near perfect rifle set up :) (something to look at for the AR10s eh? )

cant wait to see what is yet to come thinking about heading south and going after Wapiti with it next year. :)

Hi Possumtrapper,

My wife and I spent come time in New Zealand last winter. It is a marvelous country and a hunter's paradise!

It is good that you can use your NEA rifle for hunting in New Zealand. You make us all jealous in Canada because we can't do that here.

I am trying to understand the photo of your NEA bolt problems. I am not sure what I am looking at.

Excellent post !!!!!!!!

Cheers!

i have their new 18 inch setup, and after shooting it with factory ammo, i am very impressed by it. the trigger definately lighter then yours, and it shot bang on in my first 3 gun match, i havent shot mine at 100 yards, but it shot a half inch best group at 50 meters wiht a eotech mounted on it. I will be developing a 223 load for it, but i think i will stear towards bulk amounts on my dillon. i am intending to keep my rifle for an extended period of time and honestly use it, so i hope i took a worthwile risk with a new company. i live in the province this rifle is made, and im proud that its making its dayview all around the world. cheers, and im super jelous that you are allowed to hunt with this rifle, we are stuck to ranges only, regardless of lenghth.

I recognize this can. I am working on getting one into Canada currently. The manufacturing process holds huge promise for the future of suppressor design. It is very exciting.

Yeah the tech that went into that can is awesome, they make them about 40 minutes drive away from me and the designer shows up at the range most of the time. So didn't take long to come up with other bits and pieces to go on the rifle :) he's currently making up a set of extended take down pins with a twist, i'll post pics in about 2 or 3 weeks when they're ready :)
That suppressor is Titanium and weighs 206.4 grammes, the one it first had weighed 435g the Titanium one is more effective and priced fairly.

Bojangles yeah it had me wondering what the heck was wrong till the sheared locking lug fell out of the action (first lug above the ejector has broken off)

It's too bad they are still having issues with their bolts :/ my buddy just bought a new NEA, less than 200 rounds and it broke in half. Oh well.

Op- I'm sure it's just a funny angle, but in pic 11 it looks like ur about to blow your buddy's knee cap off ;)

That's awesome, I wish we could hunt and shoot AR's in the bush here. They would make awesome hunting rigs, as you have shown. You leave the rest of us wishing.

If I was not a major nationalist I would probably try move there.

Nice photos!

yeah thats why it's empty and my hands are well away from the trigger (last thing we want is to be the first to use a AR15 to shoot someone here, the police are whining enough to the politicians about them not being restricted firearms.)

could all ways come over for a holiday ;) there's no set hunting seasons down here you can hunt any non human mammal on the ground at any time (except the hours of darkness)

Damn...when I read that I feel like the little yellow guy on the left and the govt is the little yellow guy on the right :kickInTheNuts:
that suppressors not expensive compared to others available either it retails for $603.10 converted to CAD :)

Nice rifle and gorgeous country. I kind of want to move there one day.
could allways come down for a holiday ;)
