I recently purchased my second AR, and its a NEA DMR with an 18 inch barrell. I purchased this rifle due to its rather attractive price, the sheer number of features and the fact its canadian made. I intend to plink and compete with this firearm and im on a budged so i said...ahhh what the heck...might as well give her a try.

Basically the rifle has a 18 inch compensated and polygonal rifled heavy barrell. The rifle also has a free floated one piece NEA 12inch quad rail with a mid length direct impingement gas system. m4 feed ramps, full auto BCG, flared magwell. I was excited about its 1:7 twist rate, as it gave me options with heavier bullet weights

Blah Blah Blah

Now for the unboxing...the rifle was in a simple colt like cardboard box, with one magazine. The finish on the rifle is fine, with absolutely no machining marks. There is no burrs or nicks or sharp ends. The rifle was well oiled from the factory, and included three test fire shell casings. The chamber was shiny and the bore was nice and clean. The exterior was a grey matt finish of the rifle however was rather dirtly with a dusty black coating, i assume its just remnants of the machining process. A quick wipe fixed that. The user manual.....well its online, the box included a single sheet of paper with warnings and registration card printed on back. The online portion dosent work..link is out...haha, ah well, its just another AR anyways
The magazine is another issue...its in a shiny black finish, toatlly not matching the rifle, and its pinned rather ugly to 5.5 rounds and it screams craptacular ....Right off the bat i knew something was rather cheap to this mag... more on that later.

The trigger was your typical mil spec type, but i would say it wasent too bad, i held spikes and norinco rifles with worse triggers alike.

The compensator was one i have never seen before, its flat closed on the bottom, and has a even number of cutouts on the top half. We will have to see how she works.

The rifle takedown pins were TIGHT!!! you needed nails of steel to pull those suckers out, so i promptly assisted myself with a spare round to encourage them. The rifle upper and lower are married rather tight as well, didint expect her to be this tight...my norinco cq upper and lower tolerances felt sloppy or slutty when compared to the nea.....:)

After a few quick bore snake passes, cleaning patches and lube (speaking of slutty;)) thru the barrell, it was range time.

RANGE REPORT #1

So its competition day tommorrow, but guess what, i have not sighted this sucker in yet. I decided to go with a old trusty eotech 512 as my sight option, and with me, I brought some locktite, screwdriver and some American Eagle AR 223 black box 55 gr fmj ammo.

As I arrived to good ol trusty silverdale, to my dismay i found the 200/100 yard ranges closed due to backstop "reconditoning" but thank god, the 50 was still open and my intent quickly changed from a 100 yard zero mission, to a 50/200 zero.

I mounted my eotech to my liking, boresighted it, shot a 3 round group at 50 yards. The group was sub 1 inch, and it was right on, 4 inches right of 3 o clock of center. I corrected and shot anoter 3 shot group. Now heres ther kicker, the group was under a half inch dead on....wow...after my 6 inch 100 yard groups with my norinco, this rifle is feeling amazing right out of the box!!!! even with the 1 moa red dot in my eotech, she groups beautifully, no fliers, no waiting for the barrell to cool down, every group i shot was tight and under one inch, and im not much of a shot either. The 1:7 twist rate is a definate plus for the heavier bullets, so i am definately looking forward to test this rifles accuaracy potential.

I took the rifle to the 10 yard line and it shot beautiful. I basically held over the lower part of the ring and the rounds went where i wanted.

The muzzle brake was effective, waay better than the A2 birdcage, but i feel strongly that she will perform better with a battlecomp

I only fired only 60 rounds thru the rifle, no ftf, fte etc......and here comes the big however....

HOWEVER

The factory magazine is causing issues. its failing to lock back the bolt on the last round. sometimes it did, sometimes it didint, and sometimes it slammed the bolt shut after ejecting the magazine. I will be contacting NEA with the issue soon. Now i didint bring any milspec or reputable magazines with me to confirm that the failure to lock the bolt back was a magazine issue, but i will be doing that soon, how soon might you ask? how about tomorrow!!!...Im competing in a 3 gun match with it so lets just say im putting a lot of faith into this rifle.

TO BE CONTINUED with PICS

Good review. I've got an NEA lower with a spikes tactical upper on my build, and they are very tight together as well, requires quite a bit of force to separate them. Short barrel, so I'm not looking for DMR style accuracy, but the tight fit seems common with the NEA lowers.

God how I wanted this rifle for my first AR when NEA was launching, but I didn't have the patience to wait and got the norc, sounds like the OP started the same way.
My only real complaint about my norc is the wiggle between upper and lower, but I don't really think about it when shooting.

Sounds like the mag that shipped with it should go into the same pile as your factory norc mags, but that's to be expected I think.

Getting ready for a match with a brand new rifle, without a proper range session....you sound just like me! Fack it, we'll do it live!

Good review so far, we need pics!
This rifle is back on my wish list.

We need pics!

I wouldn't mind trying on of their 18 inch barrels. Love the 7.5 NEA barrel I already have.

Their 18" barrel is actually the deal of the century if you ask me. While doing my 5 sighters at 500 yards at Borden the other week, the orange indicator was barely being moved between indicated shots. I scored 48/50 on the 500 yard portion, using 8X magnification, and prone off the magazine. Not too shabby if you ask me. Especially for a $250 barrel. Now, that being said, the 5 point scoring zone is 10" I believe, but, I refer back to the setup I was using as well.

They make a good 18" barrel. Very hard to beat for the price/performance. Honrady 75BTHP Match seems to be the ticket with this barrel, moving just shy of 2600.

Great review, pictures would help though!

I'd love to get my hands on a NEA 18" upper as I love shooting my 10.5" NEA

Anyone got a source for locating a 18 inch NEA barrel? Forum sponsor? Is it mid or rifle length?

SFRC is the distributor last I heard, but, for fear of being called out for proof, it's been over a year since I heard that, and as such, make no guarantees.

Definiltey query Ryan though.

Also, mid-length.

Ok, pics will follow soon.

The competition was the police marksmanship 3 gun challenge.

Heres the recap of the competition, it ranged a mix of targets from 25 yards to 150 yards. the rifle had absolutely no issues hitting rapid fire 1x2 foot plates at 150 yards, no issues hitting 8 inch plates at 75-100 yards. This sucker does NOT miss. So far its consistent, not one failure. I was however using lar10 magazines, and i didint bother with the factory crap magazine. I definately recomend this rifle, it totally regained my trust in the ar15 platform after the Norc M4rgery totally raped it.

Its 50/200 battle zero was bang on and simply aiming dead on at all the ranges gave me the results i needed, apart from the 25, which had me holding about 2 inches high to get headshots. I did better than a lot of guys out there, and comfortably placed in the middle of the 30 shooter field. I felt good, because i am new to 3 gun shooting, new to ar's and competing against some rather amazing shooters.

I am extremely happy with this rifle. I think its the biggest bang for the buck out there right now, its got all the awsome features most manufacturers want at least a g note extra. I competed against guyst running colts, spikes, 3g's, and even a norc (which was only a lower) and it shot as good if not better then they did. Another guy there was running the same setup as me, but with a 14.5 inch barrell and he kicked ass and placed 3rd. Sure, It leaves a little bit to be desired in the paint dept. The rifle honestly looks like it was slapped together from other rifles, with the rail and upper and lower receivers the same matte grey, the barrell a darker shiny grey, the flashider black and the pistol grip and buttstock black. But if you are like me, and you bought your rifle to be used, not babied, she is for you. Afterall, the castle nut is staked, the gas key bolts are staked,i prefer function and reliability as key features, not pretty paint. Looks like NEA is learning from their mistakes!!!

this rifle is awsome.

First order of business once I get my restricted is going to be one of these and 7.5" NEA PDW!

they are nice, but fyi, if you ever want to get into ar comps, you are going to get eaten alive, as you are very limited in your range...but, its sooo cool that we can own such a short and compact ar rifle, and our poor neighbors down in new york state can only dream about them

Yeah, and in most of the rest of the states they can not only own that same short barreled rifle (for a mere $200 tax), but they can take it out in the bush to shoot or hunt with. I can't say anything about our gun laws are cool, especially since we have to compare them to the most draconian states to find something worse than what we have.

I thought American AR's had to have a 16.5" barrel in order for them to be used for hunting . . . I could be wrong. NEA makes there own barrels and they are ARC+ coated - it's a proprietary coating that has held up pretty well for my AR. It has seen over a 1000 rounds of various ammo and still looks/functions fine. I have a previous post with some pics of the ARC+ BCG just to give you an idea of what the product looks like . . .
