You could probably build an "American" AR sans-optics that runs like a top for $1000 if you were vigilant on EE.
Lifetime warranty on NEA barrels - seems like a good idea to me, especially if it's a plinker or course gun.
I by chance started with an NEA lower. It was inexpensive, Canadian-made, and I think well-designed. I especially like the well for the mag release, and cross-hatching on the front of the magwell. I have my BAD lever on it, redi-mag, ambi controls, nice trigger...all with no issues.
I can't speak for their uppers.
