So I'm looking to do a 12.5" build and there are precious few options available, fewer still actually in stock. I'd prefer a light profile barrel but those seem to be unicorns short of having one custom built.

So I'm considering all options.

Can you install an A2 Front sight base and handguard cap on an NEA barrel? I ask because in the photos of the barrels they seem to have odd profiles where the gas block would go. Has anyone tried it?

My 2 NEA barrels (14.5" and 10") have mini- small low profile gas blocks. The barrel diameter is 0.75" around that port so I cannot see / envision why that suggestion / your plans cannot work!

And yes, I have hand guard caps on my barrels and I'm running old school resin hand guards; lots lighter, too.

Here's a picture:

A little hard to make out the gas block, but at least you can see the carbine length "old school" hand guards present. :)

Build what works for you and your game!

Cheers and enjoy the addiction!

Two photos of NEA barrels pulled from retailer's sites, different generations I presume.

The top one has a slightly thicker "shelf" for the gas block. It doesn't look long enough for both points of contact of the FSB.

Bottom ones has... some kind of channel? I have no idea what that is or it's purpose. It might have the shelf as well, but it's hard to tell from the photos.

Good to know the handguard cap is good to go though!

The forward part of the barrel is turned down to .720" rather than the .750" at the gas hole. Forward section of a front sight base happens to fall on the smaller diameter. Sweat a sleeve on may be the only way to pin a front sight base to the NEA barrel.

Kind of unrelated, but I picked up a 14.5" NEA heavy barrel (same as your second pic, and a great barrel, so far) and put a Troy low profile gas block on it, no problem. But I AM curious as to the purpose of that groove machined into to barrel... Anybody know?

It's to eliminate the risk of the gas block slipping forward in the event the set screws come loose. Only 1 set screw will enter into the channel but should be enough to keep the gas block from shifting.

Nea has a c clip the goes in front of there gas blocks. They were having failure issues with there gas blocks cracking when used with a can.
