I'm browsing the EE and i keep seeing NEA/BCL stuff and i can't help but feel sorry for the folks that bought it. Their reputation has been thoroughly ruined for me (I know I'm not alone lol) and I feel bad because I SO wanted to like them being a Canadian company and being priced at a reasonable level all round.

Not only do they have a bad reputation for poor quality control, but SFRC regularly blows out their stuff for pennies on the Dollar (When BCL don't shoot themselves in the foot and not deliver it).

Is there any way back for that company - i'm willing to forgive Shillgate - but how long would they have to be making stuff that works every time before all the other issues are forgotten? How long before buying a lower for a build before i could think "OK BCL - that'll be an easy Mil Spec build"?

Todays blog post brought to you by too much time in the EE.

Olympic Arms survived close to 30 years with a terrible reputation for most of it. Of course when they started they were almost the only game in town for AR-15s. Colt was selling a couple of Sporter rifles and carbines, but Olympic had receivers and barrels and build-'em-yourself kits, stuff nobody else offered. They also developed their own design of pistol caliber conversions, using cheaper mags and simpler drop in parts than the Colt models. A lot of Olympic stuff was second rate: cast receivers that cracked if dropped, upper-lowers that had to be sold as matched pairs or else the pins wouldn't line up, lots of minor fitting of parts and a black paint-like finish.

By the time 20 years had gone by Olympic stuff was a lot better, but reports of problems still seemed higher than usual and above all, their reputation haunted them. During the great AR-15 boom years from the sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban in 2004 until the final years of the Obama administration, Olympic rode the tide that floated all boats. But as soon as the tide went out, and it became obvious that the AR-15 market in the USA was overbuilt and consolidation was necessary, they were among the first to go. They built a lot of guns for a lot of years but never got over their early reputation.

Short answer,no their ####ed their overseas contracts are the only thing keeping them afloat (how the #### do they have contracts with anybody?)

I was tempted even though I understood the issues that they had, and were most likely to have once these hit the market. The constant changes (Gen 1, Gen 1.5, Gen 2.85, etc) as well as the amount of money guys dumped into these and threw away factory parts in place of pricey upgrades have made up my mind. Ill never buy one. No matter what excuse is on the EE ad. It would be better to say its a heap and I hate it than to make the "just don't use it" or "safe Queen" comments.

I was very tempted to by a bcl 102 and was ready to get on the bandwagon until I started hearing they had issues. Glad I kept my cash in my pocket.

It's like every time they make something, everyone WANTS them to be the company they could be; but some how they always manage to fumble it.

The stripped BCL receiver sets were fine (Gen 1s). Well except the price some of us paid brand new and the huge loss we took to get rid of them. LoL

Whats even funnier is the ones selling the102 stripped sets on EE for more than what you can buy a Stag10 for. Hahhahah

The complaints by so many speak volumes, but at the same time I'm left shaking my head at all the bad reports. Not saying that they're not real or justified -- it's just that the BCL102 that ended up in my hands has been a surprisingly good performer. Other than a trigger that had far too much creep to even consider keeping, it runs well and has proven to be more accurate than I was expecting. Steel at 300m is just plain boring, so it spends more time now getting shot at 500m targets. That puts it right up there with my Armalite AR-10.

I know ... I'm dealing with a sample size of one. But it's a good one, at least in my experience.

For once, I'm happy I was too broke to get in on this. Absolutely would be bought one if I had the money. So very glad I didn't considering how the NR landscape has changed since it was announced, not to mention the questionable quality...

The price is still too high for a fun gun for me. They probably have to be that high to be profitable though. If they were priced like a M305 I might go for it. I’ve bought project guns that I never finished and sold for the same $$, but I haven’t seen many BCLs for $500 on ee yet. If I had to have an AR10-esque rifle it would be a Stag.

Sold mine for 500$ (gen 1)shipped and even saw one for 450$ (gen 2 )shipped. Heck any more than that and you get a stag10.

Thats how she goes...
