Looks to me like it would be easy to drill and tap a big hole on the left side of the carrier and threading a hex head bolt. If the bolt head is rounded off a bit, it would be similar to the cocking lever on the other side. Someone must have done this already. right?

I purchase the NEA bolt release. It required a little modding to fit but it functions very well. IMO it is the way to go for this platform. I look forward to killing a few Zombies with it at EESA this summer. The charging bolt is on the right side as well as the safety to prevent the weapon from getting pulled out of battery due to clothing, mag pouches etc: as well as from crawling around on your belly. Same deal as the safety, it is on the right side so that it cannot be moved from gear and environment.
It is a safer more efficiant way to operate the rifle, I have a 58 and have not messed with the charging handle and safety. Jus thave done way more traing working the charging handle with an underhand "rack".
