Hey guys, im new to the AR world and im looking for a free float quad rail, im looking at spending under $200. I saw the NEA quad rail on SFRC's website and im wondering how they are. I have an NEA muzzle brake but dont have experiance with any of there other products. If anyone knows of another option i'd love to hear it. Thanks

They are very solid.

The new version has the clamping feature on the bottom as opposed to the side on the old version.

Minimalist rail. Smooth on sides except for pic rails on the front side areas.

I don't think there are any Cons against it.

Come in most popular sizes I believe.

Midwest makes "2 piece" free float rails that work perfectly, fit easily and are rock solid - the good news is they're in your price range too. You just remove the Delta Ring assembly and fit up the rail - 15 minutes tops. No need to pull the barrel, or cut off the FSB. They'll give you a true quad rail with continuous top rail, and float the barrel. Wolverine is the distributor.

The NEA rail while affordable and functional just looks horrible to me but that's my personal opinion.

I know they are hard to come by and not cheap but I love my Seekins/Spikes rail on my 20" AR I built.

I think the new NEA is a good improvement on the original. No more side clamp lugs, you gain an extra QD point and you don't cover one up if you mount an accessory on a 3 or 9 o'clock rail and it's a bit lighter. Finish seems smoother and blacker than on older models, too.

I'm not sure why mine came with a barrel nut but it bolted right up to my existing one just fine.

I installed one for a fellow on the forum here.
The finish was ok. The barrel nut was out of spec. As was the interface between the nut and the rail.
I'd take pretty much ANY OTHER rail over the NEA based on that experience alone.
The only way I'd use their stuff (barrels being an exception) is if it was given to me.

I wasn't at all impressed with the one that came on my 10.5 NEA rifle a year or two ago for a few reasons:

The finish didn't strike me as being up to par, this is in comparison to Troy and KAC rails.
Being a one piece design makes it harder to clean around the barrel, this is really just a personal preference thing.
the rails felt sharp to me, but that could have just been me.
The fixed short front rail sections... If the rest of the side of the rail had been keymod or troy rail compliant, that would have been nice. To me it just felt like a low end URX.

That said, it all depends on what you are trying to build!

Did you still manage to get it installed?

We fiddled with it for some time and just got it on so he could take it home - the rail didn't quite line up with the upper receiver rail at that point.
The fellow eventually dissembled it and further tweeted the bearing surface with sand paper to get a good fit with the rails aligned.
Great idea, p!ss poor QC at the end of the day.

That was me he helped out. Thanks again! :)

I think the issues we had getting the rail on in the first place were caused largely by my noobishness. All I had to do was remove the rail and quickly ran a dremmel in there with a small wire brush to remove some burs. Once I had done that, it lined up with no issues at all.

Beltfed's assessment is an honest one, he never struck me as being against NEA just for the sake of it. I was surprised that we had the issues with the upper that I brought that day as it all fit together just fine with the previous upper I had. I was a bit disappointed.

I was at TSE the other day in Calgary and noticed that they had some new NEA matched uppers and lowers that look VERY good. The finish on both were jet black as mine is a very dark grey.

I would probably have less reservations about buying a completed upper, lower or rifle from NEA than I would about parts.

The only NEA kit I have or have had:

- 11" 10/22 barrel - shot like a laser. No fitment issues at all.
- Swiss Arms lower - the sticky details the issues with those - I had them all.
- VZ-58 muzzle brake, hand guards and mag release - no issues with any of this stuff

Robertmc helped me put an 12" on my 14.5. While the concept was straightforward it needed some "fitting" so, not drop-in. Not hard either.

First gen on bottom. Second gen on top

I wish NEA would make more 10/22 and VZ stuff. Like you I've had no issues with either.
