Hey guys! Well I recently traded my sks for a buddys spare NEA lower. Now im trying to find a upper, but there is a lot of choices! I kinda want to run 300blk so I have been looking around and the acc 300blk shorty defiantly caught my eye. This is my first AR and first AR build. I run a CZ858 for a bush rifle and love it, other than the gremlin causing issues. I use that rifle as my main but now I wouldn't mind something range only. Thanks guys!

Test fit the upper to your lower first, just to make sure. My buddy had an NEA lower that didn't mate to certain uppers.

Suggestions? Sure, slap you buddy and get your SKS back!

lol!

Cool, I will look into the areo. I contacted NEA and the lower should mate with any milspec upper. There are just so many to choose from, not to mention do I buy a complete with the handguard/ mono upper or find something with a f type front sight. Accessory wise im uncertain of what I would be running other than a AFG for a better hold.

Don't believe that Milspec bs. Many upper and lower combos that both claim to be Milspec will not mate...believe those of us who have assembled a few ARs. Maybe ask the folks here what kinds of uppers they have successfully mated with an NEA lower.

Unless you have a specific application or look in mind, I would not advise a monolithic upper since you will want to modify it as you learn more about the rifle and find out how you want to use it.

IRun Guns has a killer deal on right now for Colt uppers.

If I were to do it over again (and I will, I'm sure), I'd get a pinned on FSB on the barrel. That way you have more options, you can go carry handle irons, or pull of the FSB, put on a low pro gas block, etc.

Ok,after building 20+ AR's now,from a variety of manufacturers(several of them being NEA's) here's what I can tell you:

1)Gen 1 NEA's had a tight rear take down area, uppers I had that worked with if were:

-DPMS(very snug)
-aero(even more snug, due to the ceracoating they use,had to use emery cloth to remove some coating in the rear take down area)
-NEA(kind a no brainer, but they were the best fit...and the cheapest(SFRC has them for $90)
-Troy(very loose)
-faxxon ARAK...probably the nicest upper I had,and would highly recommend it.

Uppers I tried that would not fit with a lot of fighting:
-windham
-colt IUR's(tried both mine, and both were just to tight)
-PSA 7.62x39 upper was supperrrrrrre loose, added a wedge and it was improved, but not great.

2)Gen 2 NEA's that I've had(still have my aero,NEA,colt Franken AR) worked with all those uppers EXCEPT the colt IUR.

I'd also recommend staying away from 7.62x39 and 300blk for your first AR...they often require tuning and lots of messing about...that said I've had a few great 7.62x39 AR's

If it's your first AR, I'd stick with 5.56, simply due to ammo availability and the variety of options available. Lots of upper options on the EE - a used Colt Canada IUR or other Colt upper would be my choice, or a Daniel Defence upper. Many other good uppers available, as well. Once you choose your upper, the next step is to pick up a quality lower to go with it ;-)
