Did anyone else pickup one of the NEA quad rails that SFRC was clearing out earlier this year?

I picked mine up this week and it looks like I can't get the rail on properly and lined up with the gas tube. It looks like the barrel nut at the 12 o'clock position has teeth where the gas tube sits and the rail won't go on straight. It uses a standard barrel nut. Once my camera charges I'll see if I can post a picture of the nut and how it sits into the rail. Before I get the barrel nut installed timed and take a dremel or file off the tooth at the 12 0'clock position I'd thought I'd ask first incase I'm doing it wrong or if there's a proper way to install the rail.

Thanks

You're doing it wrong.

It doesn't use a standard nut. You have to use the one it comes with even though it looks very similar.

Install the new nut and gas tube as normal. Slide the handguard over the nut until it touches the receiver. Looking at it from above with the muzzle pointed away from you, the anti rotation tab will be just to the "right" of touching the receiver.

Then twist it into alignment.

Make sure the bolts are loosened off all the way. Some can be quite tight so you may need to spread the tightening lug area a bit.

Awesome thanks for the replies, so with the included barrel nut the Gas Tube sits over the tooth and not in between the teeth of the included barrel nut?

With respect to this comment: you can spread the lugs a bit by removing the bolts and then hold a coin in the gap while threading in one bolt from the back side.

Don't spread it too much, just enough to allow you to twist it on by hand. Spreading too much could crack a lug as it's not supposed to flex "apart".

No. That's not how AR barrel nuts work.

You need to align one of the notches in the nut with the hole in the upper so the gas tube fits in straight.

You either need to use more/less torque to line up the notch properly or shim the nut.

Edit, like this, but with the NEA nut.

Thanks for the picture. That was my understanding of how barrel nuts work. But with the NEA rail there's a tooth at the 12'o clock position where the gas tube will sit I've included pictures of the rail and the nea barrel nut below. Yes i know when picture has the barrel nut backwards but i wanted to show how it the barrel nut and the rail lined up.

However I think both of you are saying once i time it right the NEA barrel nut should be lined up properly with the rail and I should be able to get the rail on straight?

Take the nut out and you will see a circular groove inside the handguard. That groove is what allows it to twist into place.

Thanks Stevo that makes waay more sense now that the barrel nut rotates against the groove inside the handguard I was too caught up with the grooves that I could see facing the upper. That also explains why you keep suggesting loosing up the two screws so it can rotate more freely and actually twist into place. Thanks for being patient and explaining how that works.

No worries. Give me a couple of minutes, I took some pics and need to upload them.

Thanks Stevo,

Those pictures make perfect sense and the quality is great. I just got really hung up on the barrel nut and not thinking that the hand guard would rotate because of the way it sat on the barrel nut with all all those grooves on the handguard.

thanks again for taking the time to explain it and to even include a picture guide it definitely helps.
