I'm ditching my scoped set-up in favour of a red-dot. Looking for opinions on the NEA upper handguard. Does it keep zero if installed properly? How much does it weight in comparison to a CSA polymer hand-guard? And finally, what is the actual colour of the finish? Some look grey and some look black.

The best one. Low enough to co-witness with the sights. I'm going to test mine for holding a zero tomorrow. I'll report. Mine is black, but it looks grey in pictures. Doesn't weigh anything compared to the original. Here`s a pic of mine:

Ah. Thanks. My CGN search skills are lacking.

Is that a threaded hole for a set-screw at the gas block? I gather it uses original hardware, good thing I have an extra upper hand guard laying around.

Still unsure if I want to get the lower hand guard with it too.

Yes, it is a threaded hole at the gas block. I took out the set screw. There is also two holes at the rear of the mount. These are to secure the mount. I decided not to use them ...yet. It was an extremely tight fit to get it on in the first place. If it loosens up, I'll use the screws to secure it. I'm just not sure about tightening it down and deforming the gas port.

So which dealer has the best deal for this mount?

You can buy just the upper from SFRC. You can get the set at both SFRC and Kelly's (SFRC is .99¢ cheaper, if that's considered a deal :))

I don't know if I need the lower hand guard because I have nothing I need to attach. A VFG mounted under the gas block would be my preference. Too bad there isn't a small tri-rail that fits around the gas block with left, right, and bottom rails.

So I shot 35 rounds from the VZ this afternoon. After each 5 shot mag, I took the top rail off. Then reattached it. Because it's co-witness with the sights, when I reattached the rail with the red-dot on it, it was right at zero every time. Six times I took it off, and reattached it. Everytime, the red-dot was zeroed with no adjustments required.

What's more to say? If it ever does "loosen up", I may just use the set screws to firm up the rail. But for now, I am happy with the performance of the rail & red-dot. Clanging gongs that range in size from 4 inches to silhouette (4 sizes) is easy at 100m.

How does the older model compare with the most recent? I found and early un-marked one which I prefer the "look" of. Is it essentially the same minus the set screw?

hey guys I got a used handgaurd but the set screws are missing. the previous owner did leave a different set of screws with the correct thread tho.
Does anyone know the exact dimensions? like length? and the type of screw head?
Cheers

I've found them at home hardware before. I took my upper hand guard right in the store and tried the one that looked like it would work and it did.

You considerd the side mount or the dust cover mount? I tried the dust cover mount from cowin it seems pretty solid.

I've tried pretty much every mount for the vz58. For using a red dot the NEA upper works the best for me. But theyre all pretty good. I just prefer the NEA for the lower 1/3 cowitness and how easily it installs/removes.

I just got one of these. It came from a sponsor with "no set screws".
I was installing it and a little steel ball and spring fell out of it. Talk about annoying, so I had to carefully put it back in.
Does anybody have that problem? I'm imagining its just gonna fall out again once I go to clean my rifle.
So that seriously sucks lol.

Well anyways I tried it out yesterday and it was awesome! True co-witness and solid with no play.

HP , the easiest solution would be to return it for an exchange. Usually ball detente are held in place by deforming the edge of the metal hole that the ball sits in... Sounds like yours was not peen'd correctly .
If you have an appropriate punch and three hands you might be able to fix it yourself.

The ball and spring are held in by a set screw on the bottom left side.
You absolutely need a set screw in that hole, or your going to lose your takedown pin for the handguard as well.

Or maybe it's the bottom right, I don't have the HG in front of me.

Okay thanks guys! I'll be contacting the dealer for a exchange. Hopefully all is well.

Well fellows all is well as I figured. Thanks chemist for the clarification!
And yes I'll be ordering one of the parts kits once they come in, mainly because I'm quite clumsy lol
