Please don't crucify me if this is a dumb question but could a smith not just remove the existing barrel extension from the factory barrel and then use it again to build the new barrel or caliber of choice?

Agreed. The area behind the gas port and the ends of the barrel fluting nearest the gas port. Although these areas are hidden by the hand guard. Still, there seems to be no reason for this.
