I received my sizing die yesterday and thought I would post a few pics. Neal Waltz is a 81 year old retired tool and die maker who makes these dies to keep busy. They are designed to put a flat top or a hollow point on .22lr ammo and leave the ammo at 0.2245" to 0.225" diameter with better concentricity (if it was lacking prior to entering the die). I will be testing the flat top for accuracy with sorted CCI SV ammo to see if there is a difference in accuracy. Judging by the look of the hollow point, I know that it will work well on critters.

Also interested in your results! I'm actually really curious to see if the die improves on CCI SV performance. Would it also be possible to expand your testing to include something like CCI Blazer (slightly closer to bulk than CCI SV)?

Very interesting I'll stay tuned for the results! How much does the die sell for?
It was $171.00 US shipped (postal money order).

I won't promise anything. If I have some I will probably try it. If you want accuracy I would suggest trying to rim sort your ammo first to see if it will eliminate the flyers.

I started to reform a few tonight using rim sorted ammo. The rim sorted ammo will be the control group for each rim thickness and I will compare the respective groups with the formed ammo. I thought I had the stem backed out enough when I ran the first round into the die and I definitely had it down too far. Neal says in the instructions to have the flat point punch set so the flat tip is .125" to .135".

I did these first ones (10 of them) at 3/4 turn in from contact. I then decided I will do all of them from now on at 1 turn from contact as it gets the tip within the range Neal suggests.

This is the initial diameter.

Congrats KDX~welcome to the club! :) My Waltz die is my favorite rimfire accessory by far. The gaping HPs it can produce being "hard on critters?" You BETCHA! :)

^Hey TNB~I've literally run over 8,500 rounds of CCI Blazer through my Waltz die, making nasty hollow points for gopher shooting. I tested tons of ammo types in my CZ varmint, every one of them as is...and WITH some love from the WAltz die. The gun shot Blazer very well (just over 1/2" @ 50 yards) so in concert with the Waltz die...gophers get rearranged very effectively. Having run so many types through it, I can say this~Blazer is the most waxy stuff out there, so as the bullet itself re-forms...it flakes-off most of that coating and gums-up the die. I figured (when doing volume) I could get almost 75 rounds through it before it a die cleaning-out is mandatory. Most of what I've put through mine=die cleaning every 50 rounds. Again, unique to the Blazer. Ammo types like SK have more of a gummy/oily feel...and aren't an issue.

I should add, in my testing...even if the ammo type already had an HP, I'd simply make it bigger in the Waltz die. :) The fastest ammo types never shot all that accurately, but fun to see a CCI Stinger with a huge hollow point connect with a large, frozen carrot. lol Couldn't find a piece of that carrot larger than a green pea. :)

Contact info for Mr. Waltz??

I was researching 22lr resizing dies couple of years ago. The lack of before and after accuracy report online lead me to skip the process and just enjoy my 22lr rifle as is without the hassle of weighting, sorting and sizing process.

Here's an interesting reading especially the summary results on several different sizing dies. http://www.dayattherange.com/?page_id=5338

Bought my Waltz mainly for bullet tip mods. Machined up a segmented tip insert on the lathe. Expansion was as expected on gophers. Sent it off to a fellow Nutz, haven't taken the time to do another one. Once you have the set, inserts of different styles are pretty easy to do.

Awesome idea.
