Neat-O Ruger 44 mag rifle

+1 for the Deerfield. Absolutely a charm to carry, and no reliabilities issues here.

This semi-auto is great for what it was meant for, be nice to have maybe larger mags, but not needed.

Alas, three years ago it was discontinued, wrote Ruger inquiring why, standard in of no market.

I've heard good things about the 'Deer Slayer' but is tube mag, action like 10/22, DeerField is a mini14 on steroids.

Recommend it without hesitation.

I bought a deerfield brand new in the box in October from the USA for 500 USD. Was well worth importing it. I was around 750 CDN by the time I was done but I wanted that gun bad.

I had the old semiauto 44 mag from Ruger that had the tube magazine hidden in the stock and loaded cartridges from the bottom, like a shotgun. It was a really good shooter and I never had a problem with reliability. I put a Williams peep sight on it and it was a joy to carry and shoot. A bit of a pain to unload in the cold, and the ballistics of 44 mag are a bit of challenge at times. But for the right kind of hunt, it was a good gun.

I once had a blued/wood stock Ruger MkII 77/44 in .44 Mag. Wasn't impressed. Traded it off for a Win 94 Legacy in the same ctg.

Looks like Ruger is re-introducing them.....at least thats what they say on their website.

LeBaron Sports in Ontario has the new 99-44 (4 round rotary mag) listed in their catalogue for $780.00 but they haven't received any yet from the distributor.
http://www.lebaron.ca/pdf_files_fall09/hunting/ruger_rimfire.pdf bottom right corner of the page. I have my name on the list for the first one to arrive at their Toronto store. I may now pass on it as I just picked up a minty Deerfield with rings & spare mag for $700.00.

Was there a problem with the Deerfield?
Why did they stop making it for a while.
I know about the problems with the original tubefeed .44.

I'd be interested it knowing what problems others may have had with the original tube feed carbine? I have one and know others that do also. Other than the inconvenience of loading/unloading I've never known of a problem.

The Deerfield is still out of production and not likely will it be put back into production. The Deerfield was made on the same line as the M-14. Initially they shut down the M-14 line, re-tooled for the Deerfield and made a run of Deerfields. Then they shut the line down again and set it back up for the M-14 as it presently remains. When that initial run of Deerfields sold out and because the M-14 is so popular and they can sell as many as they can make, it was decided from a purely "bottom line" point of view that it was more practical to discontinue the Deerfield than interrupt the production of M-14's to make more Deerfields. And that's from the horses mouth. And that's why the last used minty Deerfield that Elwood Epps sold went for $1329.00.

I have a tube fed original Deerfield ( or " Deerslayer" ? -I'll have to look) with a built in peep sight that fits in a receiver groove.

Never had an issue except loading/unloading can be a PITA.

I vaguely remember reading that some of them with lead handloads ran into gas port fouling.

My 1962 tube fed Ruger Carbine was made in 1962 and for 47 years has been chugging off rounds like a champ. With 250 Nosler parts and Lil Gun it will also shoot into 1.5" at 100 yards.

Not too shabby a rig

I won the iron sights sight in competition at our local game and fish with my Ruger 44 Deerslayer. Shots had to be taken standing. Like Takujualuk says, around 1.5" at 100 yards. It was an excellent, light weight little rifle. A detachable mag would be an improvement, as I never enjoyed pushing shells in through that ramp in the cold or dark.
