Necessary Gear and Ammo for 3 Gun

Well, I should be receiving my NEA-15 14.5 and my Mossperg 590A1 this week
and I have a few handguns to choose from with all the gear for IPSC
I think I'll use my CZ TS for the 3 gun, but also have a CZ Shadow.

So, what will I require for the shotgun and AR as gar as gear goes...All I have so far is one 30 round mag on order and a number of 10 Round LAR mags and mag attachments I have from my SU-16.

What else will I require to start off with?

Also, what ammo should I be getting, I've been using the Federal 223 55 gr in the Su and The BDX 180 gr for the CZ

I guess Ill just go with what I have and take it from there after I talk to some people...i was just trying to be a little more prepared. with the necessary stuff.

Not a bad plan, just that I've seen some guys who've never shot a match get carried away and end up with gear that doesn't really suit.

The inter toobs is a great place to get info, but... There's nothing better than actually getting out and doing it.
 
I find its easiest to have a set up for my pistol, then I just swap between a rifle mag pouch and a shot shell carrier depending on the stage.

i know a lot of guys just had pistol belts and holsters/mag pouches, and just put the rifle mags/shells in their pockets their first time, but a mag pouch/shell caddy is easy to fit on the belt, and you will need at least one in the long run.
 
All newcomers have the same worries as yourself. I have my holster on my right side with 4 califorina shotshell holders along the front. Then 3 mag holders for my pistol mags and then two pouches for my AR15 mag pouches on my left to complete my belt. It allows me to handle almost any stage.
 
I find that on average, you'll need the following for three gun

In Canada.

- some type of shell caddy (4x4s, 4s or 6s), preferably a couple depending on which one you opt for.

- A double LAR mag pouch (hamilton tactical, epps, and likely other dealers have them, so does brownells)

- 4-5 pistol mag pouches. Likely never use more than 3, but some stages can get really high pistol counts, and bad shooting can really drive up the round count as well

- A sturdy holster, preferably with retention


US

- 2, maybe 3 pistol mag pouches

- 3-4 shotgun shell caddies

- 1 AR 15 mag pouch.

I recently bought an AR15, double pistol mag pouch in one which will be very handy for US matches



For either match, add or remove the carriers that you may or may not need. No sense carrying around extra weight. Some guys run with vests, though I haven't seen too many top shooters using them, or too many shooters of any class stay with them for very long.

What's the reason that people are not using vests? I would tend to think a vest bears the weight better.

My plan is for my pistol mags to be on my belt and rifle mags and shotgun ammo will be on the vest. I'm a little concerned my shotgun reloads will be a bit slow though as I have horizontal MOLLE carriers for the shells (In addition to the Side Saddle etc.)

Weight's not much of an issue; for most matches - you're only bearing it for the duration of the stage.
Speed and ease of access to your equipment is far more important, which you've already figured out regarding your shotshells.

It is just a game...:cheers:

Agreed... I guess it depends on round count as well. Co-locating a spare AR mag on your belt with your pistol mags and shotgun rounds is no big deal if each firearm doesn't have a high round count. I still am trying to get a feel for what typical round counts are like per stage.

I hate changing gear configurations (both because of effort involved in reconfiguring the gear itself, plus it screws up my muscle memory) so I was intending on using my belt as-is compared to what I already use for handgun matches. Rifle mags on the left side of the vest in open top pouches. Shotgun ammo in the horizontal MOLLE carriers on the right side of the vest. That configuration with my existing gear would hold 4 pistol mags, 3 rifle mags (whether three 5-round PMAGS or six 10-round LAR-15 mags coupled end to end), and 18 shotgun rounds in addition to whatever is in a sidesaddle, etc. That may sound like overkill but I figure that way no matter what the round count on a given stage I am good to go without having to worry about moving pouches or whatever.
 
so there is no rule about no vests/ all gear on a belt? are there any gear rules, or is it largely dependent on the match organizer
 
Something not to be overlooked, is reloading your shotgun in multigun events.....shotgun reloads are key to getting competitive times...they can be make or break moments in an entire event. I suggest getting some shotgun caddies and practice, practice...pratice some more. My multi gun belt is laid out with 2 or 3 shell caddies at the front, pistol mags in the usuall spot, and ar pouches behind those.
 
Sometimes you have to improvise..
When you find out the next stage is 45 shot shells and you don't have the capacity to carry that much in the way of stripper carriers

I thing gear is a evolution of personal choice...
When I started shooting 3-gun I initially went with the pseudo tactical gear.
Vests, thigh holsters. More vests, straps, clips and what not.

Ten years later I'm down to a belt.

It's all you really need.

All that LBV stuff is great when you're in a (real) combat theater.
It'll slow you down at play
 
The key is to have enough capacity in your firearm to never have to reload.
That's why my shotgun has a 6 foot extension tube!!!.

If I run out of ammo, I just poke and knock plates over from distance as I run by.
