neck size question.

It appears you're doing pretty much everything that Tubb does but I see he does a
slight turn and .267 and .265 bushings. Have you tried any 4831 or 4831sc? I would
maybe try that if you had some. I see that Tubb jams his bullets pretty good when
shooting long range.
As far as neck turners go Sinclairs has them from around 60 bucks to 150. I use Sinclairs
deluxe which allows you to make a fine finish cut without changing the initial setting.
You really don't need the pricey one as you only need to cut a few thou off 60-70% of
the neck to make them uniform. The guys at Sinclair will tell you what you need.

I have tried H4831sc,H4350 and RL17. I settled on the 4350 as there was a pretty marked improvement right from the start. Does the Sinclair deluxe have the ability to change the mandrels? I will be trimming several calibers like 6xc, .308 and .223.
 
Yes it does. Mandrel is held in at the top by a set screw. Whatever type you get I like
being able to set the cutter to do most of the cut then you just turn a knob to do the finish and you don't have to change the cutter. Only bad thing is this makes you want to buy one for each calibre. Just to let you know I shoot a .262 tight neck and I'm using a .259 bushing to neck size but I also have a .258 on hand.
 
While I'm sure that they exist, I've never seen a neck-turning rig that doesn't take mandrels of different sizes.

That said, some neck-turners do come in size ranges, IE. small (.17 and .20 cal), med (.22 to .375-ish) and large (.350 to .60-ish), so do check that any rig you buy is suitable for what you're planning to do.
 
Cool. Everything I have should fit into the medium catagory then.
Yeah I suspected that you could change mandrels but i couldn't find anything on the website to say it was so. Now perhaps you can explain what the expander does? I understand that it expands however I don't follow why it is needed.

I use a Hornady tool for cleaning up my case necks and despite how folks rave about the fancy $300 tubeing mic I get along fine without it... If I was F-class I might step up to it tho.

I haven't found a need for the expander Mandrels after FL sizeing with Redding and RCBS dies or with my Lee .223 collet die but to each there own... I do know my pilot on the Hornady cutter is a tight tight fit for both my calibers and I hold .0135"-.0130" consistently on my necks... Often it is spot on with no deviation I can measure.

I have also used the Lee collet dies on necks and have noted that others that use them also have measured less runout/variations with the collet style neck sizers.Another benefit is no lube is required and yet one more benefit is not over working the brass giving it greater life.
 
Try dropping a bullet into a fired case. It should just drop right in. If it doesn't, then something is causing interference. It could be donuts, a burr in the case mouth or just a mis-match between the case neck thickness and the chamber as mentioned above.

Clean bullet release is essential to good accuracy. You can be thorough as you want trying to achieve perfect run-outs and consistent/ideal neck tension. It's all pointless if brass is getting pinched between the bullet and the chamber wall.
 
In my case for my two 6br's I use Wilson dies for neck sizing and seating. I have a Redding full length die but never use it. I use the expander on the necks that are dented
from extraction. My necks are pretty thin and dent easily. I also suspect I'm getting
"the donut" on the inside of the necks and although I doubt the expander does anything
to control it I hope it keeps things uniform.
 
So if a bullet doesn't drop freely into a fired case am I to expect that neck turning might be needed to even things out?

Not so much to "even" things, but to ensure that the pressures stay below catastrophic levels.
Srsly, if the bullet can't cleanly release for the case, your pressures are going to be climbing, probably dangerously.

(That having been written, I have read about a technique that utilizes the brass's ability to "spring-back" to eliminate sizing entirely. if one's necks are really uniform, and the neck clearance is about 0.001"-to-0.0015", there is just enough clearance to release the bullet; but the brass "springs back" from the neck (to allow extraction), so there is still enough neck tension to grip the bullet.
I emphasize that I've only read about it, and while it's interesting, I'm not going to try it... not just yet anyway.)
