neck sizing

if i load a batch of brass for one rifle only, I only need to resize the neck right? assuming i'm 2-3 gr below max, about how many loads should i get from the brass? btw it's a 270 win. thanks

if you neck size, you are "go" for one rifle, from which you got the brass.
You will increase the life of the case at least by 40-50% just neck sizing.
Also, you may improve accuracy just doing the neck.

Reloading is a complex activity and 2-3 grain bellow the max charge is hard to establish, not knowing what is the max OAL to the ogive. Having that information we decide how far we want to be from the ogive and what is max safe charge for that caliber.

You know that the ogive is a part of the bullet, don't you?
 
not sure if i understand exactly. if i keep my loads all the same length, and just change the amount of powder, say to 2 or 3 grains below the max listed, how many reloads?
 
It's not that simple.

I suggest you go re-read the first part of your loading manual again. Pay particular attention to load development.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, But I think you have missed some valuable info that would take pages to write about here.

Or I am completely misunderstanding what you are after.....
 
The actual definition of ogive is the whole curved part of the bullet. The part of the ogive that is commonly referenced with regards to reloading is as you stated, the part of the curve that would engage the rifling.

Thanks Joe for letting me know, :)
isn't that the term commonly used when referring to establishing the OAL?
Ogive is a place when, if bullet is pulled enough from the case eventually will stop at rifling of the barrel.
