Best general-purpose tool: the K&M. It adjusts both in and out in .0001" increments. Available through Bruno's and other places. Instructions come with it, but heres a site that goes over case prep in general: http://www.6mmbr.com/jgcaseprep.html

Get the K&M carbide turner mandrel for your calibre, and the steel expander mandrel with its die body holder. These are matched to give good turning.
Anhydrous lanolin is the best lube for case neck expanding and turning.

According to their web site K&M will be closed for a while (3 months) in the meantime, Sinclair markets a neck turning tool, and an adjustment fixture with a choice of .001 or .0001 dial indicators. Just Google Sinclair International.

The base sinclair tool adjusts in, but not out. In other words, if you adjust it in just a bit too far you then have to back the screw out and push the cutter back manually, and try again.

Not a big deal if you set it up once and leave it, but a huge pain if you do multiple calibers.

So you would go with the NT-3000 for in/out adjustability ($99 for the 'kit') Then, if you want on-the-fly thickness checking, you have to get the 'adjustment fixture' ($49). Or you could get a K&M with these features built-in for $57 from Bruno's Shooting Supplies.

On top of that, the K&M shellholder is superior. Uses inexpesive Lee inserts (the ones Lee uses for its primer tool) and is a lot easier to get cases in an out of.

K&M may be closed at the moment, but that doesn't mean they don't have product at their retailers. Best to ask before assuming.

I have the Sinclair tool, and I guess it depends on your personal needs, but you can do say 100 brass in an evening, or one TV show (been a while), After that, I'm good to go for a while. I only ever used it on my .222 brass, and it's not as though we have the prairie dog shooting some have, but since it's a one time/case operation, I can't see adjustment being a big problem, though some seem to be finding it so with their particular needs. Now if it was like reloading dies and I had to reset every time I loaded...

Deerslayer - I'm assuming you're speaking of outside neck turning rather than OAL trimming. For OAL trimming I would get the Wilson setup from Sinclairs. For outside neck turning I would use K&M. If K&M are down for a few months try Russ Haydon down in Washington. Phone 253 857 7757. Russ is very good to deal with

Another 'thumbs-up' for K&M - just saw the reference to K&M being down for a few months due to health on the Precision Reloding site. Hope all is well soon - they make some nice tools. I only outside neck turn (as well as OAL). Inside neck turning I'll leave with the BR crowd. I don't have the Sincalir neck turning tool, but judging from the volume of other Sinclair tools on my bench, I'd heartily recommend them as well.

That is a great link, thanks for posting it!

Has anyone been able to confirm whether K&M is out of service? I am afraid my love for oddball cartridges is pushing me towards needing a turner of some sort. I'd liketo get the brass back in spec after reforming (necking down) from another case.

Thanks for your help!
