I'm about to try my hand at neck turning for the first time. I'm just wondering if I am setting up the correct way. 223 caliber with a Forster neck turner if that matters.
I have fire formed my brass, the 224 mandrel is an easy sliding fit onto the brass. My intention is to use my Lee collet die to slightly increase the tension on the mandrel before turning. Does this sound like the correct way to proceed or should I be using a regular neck die?

I haven't turned necks but the ammomaster videos on you tube showed neck sizing brass with the collett die, rotating it 180 degrees and sizing again. Then he checks for runout on the necks and turns if necessary. Google the videos, they're quite good.

If you turn the necks too much your collet die will need to have mandrel inside decreased to get enough neck tension to hold the bullet. I have neck turned cases just enough to get about 1/2 the neck turned, it didn't hurt anything but it didn't help either. As mentioned before without a custom chamber it probably won't do any good.
