Necking Up to 284

While never having done that particular caliber, I have made 356 win from 307 win. I simply lubed the outside as usual and added a bit of lube to the inside of the mouth of the case. Ran it through my 356 die and voila 356 win cases. Your change is not that great so I would think it should be easy. Nothing to lose, try one and see.

Did not mention the die brand. Necking up is made easier using an elliptical expander sized to .281". The procedure requires lube in case mouth, sizing wax works good, as does anhydrous lanolin (available at most pharmacies).

Your only going up 20 thou so it's easy. A tapered expanding button from Redding only costs a few dollars and works extremely well with Imperial sizing wax.

Kinda ironic though, The 284 was around since 1963..... then some one necked it down to 6.5 X 284 because there were no cases available so now you're necking the "wildcat" to make "factory" cases:D

I doubt you need a special neck die.
Any regular FL die should do the job since your not expanding very much.
Do clean the inside of the neck & lube well thou.

I've opened up 284 brass (Winchester & Lapua) to 30 cal to make a short 30-06. Imperial Sizing Die wax and any 30 caliber FLS Die, as long as you don't go past the expander ball.

I saw 6 bags of 100 winchester new brass on a shelf today, thought of this thread and laughed at you. 41.99/ thousand, I was going to buy it and send you pictures of me sizing it down to 6.5 but decided that would be cruel.

PM me if you want some of it, its 20 minutes from my house and I will be driving past the place that has it multiple times over the course of the weekend.
