With hunting season approaching I'm finally getting around to loading up some ammo for my .45/70, only trouble is that I'm having a hard time locating a recipe for the bullets that I have laying around. Here are the ingredients:

-405 grain FP lead with gas checks
-H4895

Anyone know of a good jumping off point for these two? I've loaded up quite a few 350 grain Hornady but never cracked into this box of lead and I'm looking for a bit of guidance.

Yeah I did forget to tell you what it's going into. It's a Marlin 1895 XLR. The Reloading centre has no 405 grain listed in the "Lever" section, but I suppose I could start off with the trapdoor load and go from there.

as far as black powder is concerned i used to load 70 grains FF by volume and that would compress the powder under a 405 grain bullet.
that was in a trapdoor, quite accurate and not what i would consider a "hot load"

I have had great success loading heavy .45-70 loads for my Ruger #3 with 300, 350 and 405 gr bullets using Alliant RL #7... Very accurate and cosistent velocities, just a little stout for casual plinking!
