I am looking for a Precision Rifle that will put me out to maximun of 900M (most shooting should be around 600 but I am told I will have to take some shots at 900). I want to stick to something in .308. My experience with any distances this close are with C3's and an AI .338's, obviously government owned, I definatly do not have the money to afford shooting .338 nor buy an AI rifle. I am thinking a remington 700T with a 20 inch barrel, or the Mossberg 100 ATR Night Train seems like a good buy and shoot rifle. These should put me out to 800M no problem, would I be able to push them out to 900M?

Any other suggestions? I want to keep the rifle around $700 if possible I still need to invest in optics and bipod and perhaps a stock.

Thanks in advance,

mossberg ATR night train out to 800m?

am I the only one having an awkward feeling upon reading this?

My only issue with the remington 700 SPS tactical is that with a 20" barrel I don't think you will get the range past 600m I can see a heavy .308 round dropping pretty fast. Am I looking at needing something around 24"? I really don't know I am just used to being told what to shoot and it is alot different when it comes to $10,000 Rifles....

The night train from the 1s I have shot are not even in the running. They may fling a bullet out to 900 but 1/4 minute of mountain accuracy is not what you are looking for I suspect.
The 700 SPS in either the Varmit (24" bbl) or the SPS Tactical (20"bbl) will get the job done. The stocks on both are not the best but can be upgraded.
Those who "know" that to get to 1000 yards requires a 26" barrel are only fooling themselves, they should wake up and smell the GSR.
We build ALOT of 308s that run between 20 and 22" barrels and these rifles are used for extreme precision shooting be police depts. Although unlikely for any LE personell to be allowed to take a "working" shot at any real long distance, these guys DO practice out to 900 mtrs and beyond and DO so with great effect.

The group I shoot with shoot clay pidgeons on the ground or steel gongs with our 308s at 800 plus yards as a good warm up for going longer, we all run 22" barrels , but if a factory rifle is all the budget allows and if it were me I would go something along the lines of a 700P or LTR, yes slightly more expensive from the start but at least you get a ridgid stock rather than tupperware.

Get yourself a Sportco Model 44, 7.62 NATO. That will get you 900m easy and for under $500. That's how I started my F-Class fun.
They are single shot stiff action and accurate. Great starter gun.
Check out the EE.

Thanks in advance,

You are not going to get precison in the price range. You are going to get average factory rifle performance. Sorry, but there it is.

You are not going to get a quality scope for $500, you will get an optical sight with medicore optical quality and questionable repeatability.

Precision shooting requires the right rifle with the right components and sights, PROPER loads matched to the rifle and experience with reading conditions.

Any heavy bullets in calibers 223's and above - in the right gun - will do 900 no problem.

i see what you mean...although certain equipment is up to the task with someone who knows its limitations and abilities, but in the hands of someone who just bought it and doesnt know its abilities, it cant get the job done

If you're going to get into long range shooting and shoot with a bunch of Target Rifle shooters, then get a .308. You'll get lots of advise on how much wind, elevation and any tech problems you'll run into. They are only too glad to help you solve your 900m hits on paper. It's a good place to start to read wind, then move onto other calibers once you settle in.

Obtunded is correct in saying about the .223. If you know how to handload with a custom built gun, then the 80gr bullets work well too and will equal the 155gr .308 @900m. The 154gr Lapua or Berger 155.5gr even better!

Since the man is on a budget, start with a good .308 that issue ammo will work with if you don't handload and go from there. Talk to people who shoot 900m before you rush and buy just any gun. You will be disappointed in plain jane factory offerings. Many good used target guns available for less than you think.

Within the budget mentioned, the Savage 12FV should be given serious consideration. Once bedded and the barrel channel opened up alot, it should be 1/2 to 3/4 min capable.

More then enough accuracy to get started in LR shooting.

if you are handy with woodworking, you can modify/reinforce this stock easily and then you have a very capable rig.

Dial in some 75gr Amax and Berger and you are only limited by elevation in your scope.

Think reloading as a critical part for your success.

Why is a factory rifle so tough to work with?
Yes a factory rifle will work with some good tweaks. Not saying they're all bad. Tikka T3 HB in 6.5x55 will work real good in F-Class to 900m, but this is over the budget. A Rem 700 HV that will shoot that far if you handload and has a good barrel, but again over budget. No doubt Savage has a good record.

Was yours a rack grade rifle with no tweaks and shooting consistent 1/2 MOA out of the box? Sounds like a good starter gun. How much?

Rifle right from the shop. Only thing special was a 25 moa base.

Otherwise all factory.

1/2 moa. I highly doubt it. I have a bunch of good factory ammo for it from Lapua, Swiss Ammo, Federal Gold Match, Hornady Match, HSM with Berger loaded into them. And another HSM match type ammo.

I know the rifle shoots pretty good. I am happy with it.

$1200 at the time back in 05. Shoots so well that I still have it.

On Edit; Squirrley11 doesn't mention competing in F class, so absolute precision may not be required.
