Need a new(to this rifle) barrel for a 1940 660 code k98. Rifle would rate NRA Good condition (mix-master numbers & parts buffed clean after being left in a damp corner too long I think) except for the condition of the bore, which is awful. :puke:

I don't need to match codes or years - unless there's a threading issue between years/mfg ?

Any pointers? I would like to keep it cheap - a reasonably priced bore and hot dip and I could still be cheaper than the last R/C I bought - Otherwise I gotta armwrestle the fellow I bought it from for a return.

Thanks in advance.

I had to look to the U.S. for a donor barrel and parts for a Gewehr 98 restoration project. Had to go through an importer as well but it worked out just fine in the end. Took a while to go through the process but it was worth it.

Not the best place to start first so I suggest posting a WTB ad in the Parts forum, you never know what might turn up.

Another option would be a bore from another large-ring Mauser. They're all the same yes? Specs I found are; 1.410 diameter receiver ring, 8.750 in length, with screw spacing of 7.835. Barrel Shank of 1.100
Large ring have a threaded shank diameter of 1.10 in. With 12 threads per inch.
Are there any fitment issues I would need to be looking out for if I went with say a vz24 barrel? Will the k98's stock parts fit a vz24 barrel?

Found lots of pics but best to ask those who have the know...

When you consider the sheer number of these things that have been made into sporters, along with the rotten reputation of the 8x57 cartridge (VERY much undeserved), there has to be a takeoff barrel around somewhere. Last one I saw was begging at 60 bucks and in v. nice shape. I didn't need it because mine still only has 300 through it since I took the grease out.

Keep eyes open and talk to guys who work on them. They ARE out there.

Too bad we can't say the same thing for .303s!

Good luck, friend.
