Thinking of a getting a bipod for my Rem. 597 for bench rest shooting and need some suggestions? I'm handgun guy and have no experience with bipods.

I would like something not too expensive, compact and fairly lightweight. Pics are welcome! Also where is a good place to get one?

...Harris.

There is no substitute.

For Benchrest shooting you may want to think about getting a rest instead of using a bipod. You will most likely find that you can shoot better with a front rest and rear bunny/rabbit ear bag then you can with a bipod. However, if you have decided that you just want a bipod, either 6-9" (which would probably be better for shooting off the bench) or 9-13" would be good choices. Harris as mentioned is proabably the way to go but there are cheaper "knock-off" versions of the harris bipod as well that may be worth looking into ;)

Rock mount comes to mind (and there is one other one that I can can not think of right now - Maybe Stoney point)

If you take a look at Wholesale sports, russels, or SIR you will probably find what you are looking for there.

In the ruessles Catalog a standard 9-13 rock mound bipod is $57.00. A Harris is about $90.00.

Harris HBL-S (9"-13" w/swivel) ...LeBaron sells them for around $117, but you can also buy them from S.I.R. Mailorder, BassPro, or a lot of local gun shops.

...I think so, but it really boils down to personal preference.

The swivel gives you more flexibility when shooting (both figuratively and literally). I added the 'Pod-Lock' option to mine ($26USD/Brownells) which makes locking/unlocking the swivel even easier.

Investing in a good bipod is like investing in a good scope. If you get the best one you can afford, you won't regret it ...because even though your rifles may come and go, a good bipod - like a good scope - is going to get passed from rifle to rifle for years to come.

IM Luger: As Terry menitioned it really narrows down to personal prefference. Is Harris 1a2 good enough?? I would day for bench rest shooting it would be a good choice so to answer your question; I would say yes, it is good enough. To me $70.00 sounds like a good price considering Russels lists it for $20 more.
