Hi all!

I want to oufit my 30-06 with a scope to go hunting. I want to hit targets from anywhere between 50 to 250 yards. There are so many kinds of scopes out there, I don't know what to pick, I am new at this. Can anyone recommend a good hunting scope averaging 250$?

Thanks

You are correct, their are many , too many :D , I have a low power variable on my 06 , but its a costly one. There are many that will do a fine job in your price range, keep an eye out on ee(optics ee forum), and if your un certain that its right, pm me any time :) . That is your best option , as picking one out of a store will eat up much of your funds , and you will end up with less scope for the money.

They might be a few more bucks than your budget, but the Leupold VXIs are worth a look. I'd go with a 2X7 or 3X9 personally. The Leupold warranty / service is tough to beat if in the rare event you need it.

I would agree, step up the price a little and get a Leupold, if anything ever happens to it just send it back to Leupold and it is covered no questions asked, they either fix it or give you a new of equal value.
With that being said my preference would be a Vari-X II 4-12X40 AO, this scope used will run about $350.00, but you'll have to look hard for one at that price, I haven't paid more than that on a great shape used one ever this year, and I won't.
The 4-12 allows you see very well at longer distances, and it starts at 4 just like most fixed powered scopes for a good up close shot, the nice thing about the AO (adjustable Objective lens) is this feature helps you focus in on your target better and once you are focused have a look at the reading as to where you adjusted the AO and this should give some indication as to the yardage your target is at, but for those quick shots (Game on the run) always leave the AO at 100yrds.
I had a Savage Model 110 in 30.06 and it was one of those package deals, scoped up with a Tasco 3-9X33 (now sits on top of the 10/22 for now), I didn't like it on this application so I went with a Bushnell (the days that I didn't know better) 3-9X40, and then another Bushnell 3-9X40 then a Nikko Sterling 3-9X40 AO.
The load was anywhere between 55g-57g IMR 4350 pushing Hornadys 168g Amax moly, and sometimes factory ammo.
This rifle liked to kill scopes, especially Bushnells, the old Tasco still works, and when I sold the rifle the Nikko was still holding it's own, but you had to let the duplex calm down to make a very accurate shot because it was vibrating from the recoil still, so on quick repeat shots the accuracy wasn't as good but still good enough for hunting. What a mule kicker that thing was (it weighed in at 8.5Lbs scoped), it used to kick so hard that after every ten shots I had to tighten the large bolt/screw on the end of the bolt (which did have lock tight on the threads) every now and then the primers would get bent in half without firing because of the bolt coming loose (firing pin was no broken). I bet you though that a Leupold would have been just fine atop that beast. So I learned it pays to go with quality, rather than half ass'd crap.

If you don't need it right away shop around ask some question, there are deals to be found out there.

Hope you get what you need/want.

P.S.
Now don't get me wrong most 30.06's a have shot are quite tame in the recoil department as I have shot 375HH, 7mm Rem & Wby, 12g's and soon to be a 340Wby and more, but this one 110 was a kicker, almost equal to the 375H&H I had and that gun weight more.
