That is the same model of lathe that I have. Excellent gunsmithing lathe.
Weighs about 3/4 ton.
 
I was looking at that one last night, online.

Nice collection of tooling with it, appears to have all the basics plus a few bonus extras, and it has a taper attachment, which a lot didn't get. They can be a bugger to find when you go looking after the fact.

Cannot really tell the voltage, so that is a bit of a crapshoot. The only label they showed was on the contacter box, with the ratings for the contacter at various voltages. But it is possible that it is a 220v 1ph or 3Ph unit, but equally likely that the motor and electrics are 575v, so factor for a replacement motor and some contacters, as well as a replacement pump motor for the coolant if it is still there.

IIRC from the last one of those I ran, it was around 3 HP for the spindle and 1/3Hp for the coolant pump.

A far nicer lightweight lathe than the Chinese offerings, for like as not, less money, too.

Well, there's a lot of ways to get it to Edmonton. One truck site I'm on has a section to help connect people with haulers, etc. Some are probably "hot shot" level or less, or looking for extra loads. Can be good pricing, even with the limited time frame you're looking at.

You don't have to be present to pick up.

As for the wife, (you should know how to survive a personal purchase) but you have to be present to pick up....

I have a lathe it's not as nice as that one......

shipping as you point out would not really be a big problem.

explaining to the wife why I need a second lathe would be. ;)
 
Running it dry could have done serious harm.
Both the headstock and apron run in oil; there is a sight glass in each.
This one would need careful inspection.
Replacing seals could be a bit of an adventure.
LeBlond in the US acquired the assets of the SM company that made this lathe; that is where I got the manual for mine. The current SM company is a different one.

Governments were about the only buyers of these, mainly because of requirement for North American content in some procurement contracts.
Everyone else was spending their own money. And paying a LOT less.

But the Government contracts kept the manufacture of them going, and they are still made, IIRC.

3 phase isn't an issue, voltage might be, per my post above.

It's a flip of the coin as to whether there was a problem with the lathe or not, most likely someone wanted the floor space or thought they could get a NEW lathe and would be happier.
Bid accordingly to your ability to suck it up and learn from your mistakes, if it turns out to be a dud. Risk nothing you cannot afford to watch burn, eh?

I have bought worse looking than that, and would not hesitate on that one, were I shopping for another lathe. Not on any fears of damage in the gearbox or gearboxes, anyway.
