It doesnt look like anyone is going to buy my mini 14 anytime soon so maybe I will tweak it a bit.

As I have nothing to compare it to, I need a volunteer with a 181 series or later to measure his/her return spring for me and their guide rod (The one that pushes the whole works forward for another round, located inside the fore end.)

I have an older mini so I need to find out two things really. How much time has affected my baby, and weather or not newer parts are compatible. So if anyone is good enough to help me out on this could you also please tell me the series of gun you are going off of? (Its the first 3 digits of the serial number)

If you tell me the following I would be very greatfull.

1 - The outside diameter of your return spring.
2 - The outside diameter of your guide rod.
3 - The overall, uncompressed length of your return spring.
4 - The series of mini 14 you are measuring.

Thanks!

Since it just doesnt seem polite to ask without providing my own info, my 180 series spring is approximately 5/8" in diameter and 10 1/8" in length. The rod is about 1/4" in diameter. I am just measuring with a tape measure.

Thanks all!!!

Just took some mesurements for you.

1. 0.360" (measured with calipers)
2. 0.250" (measured with calipers)
3. 11" (measured with steel ruler)
4. 196 Series

Hope this helps.

My calculator has gone awol, but .36 sounds like it could be a bit smaller than 5/8". Maybe I cant just order a replacement from one of the newer models.

Thankyou for your help ZuluMike.

There are very few parts from 181 and later Minis that will fit a 180 series. If an extractor is needed, aftermarket ones have been made. Brownells has sold them.

Yeah, I know they are damn hard to find though (180 series parts) Lucky for me I think I just need to keep my fingers clear of the cocking handle. I tried it again today and had no stoppages.
