Need a pump action shotgun for SASS

original Winchester 97 or one of the clones are the only pumps legal in SASS rule matches. Win 87 or clones and Win 1901 are the lever guns that are allowed, their are still some chicom 87 copies around but they are getting scarce. One of my Yankee buddies COG uses a 87 copy and it is very quick. More shooters use the 97s they are easier to become proficient with although they are more prone to malfunctions than doubles. it does help, thanks. I love lever action, I'd rather go that route
 
What Garand said. However, I recommend the 97 as it will allow you do more SASS activities. It is the only shotgun allowed for Wild Bunch. Frontier Firearms just brought in a shipment of chinese 97's. I received mine on Tuesday last, and shot it at a Wild Bunch match on Friday. While it was very clunky in the beginning, after about 20 rounds it started to lock up properly. Also consider that there are more people who know how to work on 97's then the lever shotgun, which always helps when you need a hand at a match.

Not as of yet anyway. Shot the match with the Wild Bunch RO instructor and the 97 is still the only go to gun. The regular version and the trench gun are all fine, and the break down one too.
 
I thought I read something about that too. I took the Wild Bunch R.O. course in Dec. and it was still the 97 Only back then, but it seems to me that they are changing to allow the Model 12 in. (Apparently based on the fact that the supply of original 97's is drying up, and it's getting harder to get the chinese ones in the States, so for the sport to grow....) I'll check into it and get back to you.
 
I double checked the latest rules book and still 97 only. Must be just talk for now, but I do remember something about a move in the direction of allowing Model 12's. Patience.

The Model 12 will be legal 01 January 2013 ! Got mine off the EE on Friday and contacted a gunsmith to get it prepped for competition last night. You can guarantee that the price will jump on M12's in the next 6 months.
 
Very interesting. Since the Wild Bunch movie "takes place" in 1913 I believe, the Model 1912 would be era correct (except that it was only available in 20 gauge until 1914, when 12 and 16 gauge were added).
