Need a Reliable and Accurate Semi-Auto Rimfire

I currently have a Savage MK-II that I love, but this rifle is heavy and set up as a training to my long range unit. I am looking for a semi-auto to use for general plinking and hunting. The thing is, I want something built for an adult (I'm 6'5"), semi auto, and be able to shoot within 0.5-0.75 inches at 50 yards if I do my job.

I am looking for a rifle good right out of the box, so no offence but that rules out the venerable 10-22.

Any suggestions? Budget is $750 or less and must be non-restricted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If a 10/22 is out, maybe a keltec SU-22 with pistol grip?
$500 for the rifle, it's threaded, fold in half, is less than 5lbs, takes BD 26, 32 mags and there is a conversion for the AM180 drum mags = 275 rounds!
The pistol grip is another $130 IIRC. This also addes abit of length and you could always add a pad to meet your shooting position.
 
Marlin 795 might feel tiny in your hands...Remington 597 might be your gem. Either are weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell below your budget. CZ makes a semi, but I've not owned one of those gems.

I'm the first to trash-talk the 10/22! My personal dislike is no secret, but they are loved by many. There are some folks who have gotten a functional rifle right out of the box.

For used rifles there are many (again, well below your budget) that are full sized, and can shoot like the dickens! Mossbergs, Savage/Stevens/Springfields, and many more.
 
Marlin model 60 or 795. Very accurate out of the box. Mine had over 1k rounds and no problems that weren't because of sh!t ammo. Best of all they can be had for $150-200
 
Winchester 490....the feel of a big rifle and deadly accurate to 100 and minute of gopher.
. Can be found here in Canada but few seem to be in EEs. I have 2 and afraid i will not part with either. They eat any ammo i put thru them...333/555s are not a problem as many other semis have throat problems with them. Box mag fed ..5s and 10s. Priced from $200-300.
 
I actually have a 490 and don't find it all that reliable. Well I did until I got the Savage. The 490 is beautiful and a man sized rifle. I've never had any issues with it though.

I would love a TC benchmark but they stopped making them and anyone selling one is fully aware of that.

Are the Keltec's accurate?
 
I am building a little rig on a Marlin 795 platform.

I have gone the 10/22 route and spent $1000 on one and it still would only shoot 1/2 inch groups at 50.

Currently my plan is to build a nice rig out of a Marlin 795 as they are much cheaper, and far more accurate out of the box.

Now there is still some problems with the 795 that IMHO need to be addressed.

1) crappy plastic trigger guard and trigger. I have ordered a DIProducts Amuminum trigger and replacement trigger guard and from all the reviews they will be perfect.

2) crappy sights and as with any gun in this price it is simply a matter of $$$. I have ordered a set of Tech Sights to replace them and once again the reviews are outstanding. Apparently the Marlin 795 with a set of Tech Sights is the go to for appleseed competition in the US and their are tons of reviews out their on botht the gun and sights as well as many on the setup.

3) rough internals that need to be cleaned up, and polished to get a smooth operating and reliable gun. Lots of info out their and seems to be al very simple with only some minor skill and basic tools.

I will post a thread when it all comes together...
