Just ordered a browning blr 450 marlin (thanks epps) and wondering if a leupold vx1 3-9 will stand up to he abuse of the 450 or if I need a better scope. I think 3-9 ought to be enough it's not a long distance round

3-9 should be plenty you could likely get away with the 2-7 depending on your preference? I was really impressed with the glass on the new vx1 scopes when I looked at them. I would think it would be fine on that cal? They do carry an excellent lifetime warranty with a quick turnaround.
Well said. 3x9 is unnecessary. I would never stick a 3x9 on a .450 Marlin BLR. If you do most of your shooting at ranges requiring 8 or 9x magnification, then a .450 marlin is a poor choice. When you get into any kind of a close-up situation, 3x is ridiculously over-magnified. Check out 2-7, it will be a way more versatile setup. If it was me, I'd go with something in the 1-5 range. As for brand, can't go wrong with Leupold.

I read your post,and thougt I would put your experience to the test.Looked thru a VX-R 3-9 at an object 25 yards away set on 3.Tried the same with a VX3 1.5-5.Try it and see how much difference you see.The poor choice in my eyes ,is the 450 marlin.
To each his own, but even if you prefer 3x9 you must concede that 3x is unnecessary at 25 yards and 9x is unnecessary on a 450 marlin. 3x9 remains a poor recommendation if you ask me. Linear field of view at 100 yards is 74.70 feet for the VX-2 on 1x magnification versus 34.60 feet for the VX-2 on 3x magnification.

Another vote for the 1-4x Leupold. 3-9x is excessive on a 450.
Nice for everyone too comment on power ... but i think the real important question was the recoil. IMO ... I wouldnt put a VX3 on that. Ive had 3 and the have all had paralax problems on my 300wsm. I would step up to a mark 4 or a Night Force. I do agree with lots of the guys that maybe a 1-4 might be the best choice.
The VX3's are good scopes. For all out durability they are far from mil spec. I would personally look for something in mil spec for something of that calibur. Just to save headaches.

Oh god ! i didnt notice you said VX 1 .... Hell no !!! They are horrible for not holding up on recoil .. Bin there done that
I just gave that exact scope away ... nothing but problems. Its second home was Korth
If a highend variable power is not in your budget i would go to a fixed 3 or 6 power ... way more durable. They are not real cheap either, but for the money i think that is you best bet.
Ya dont do it , sell it and up grade if you have too ... i can all but gaurentee that it will not hold up. I had lots of problems with the exact same scope on my 300wsm. When they finally gave me a brand new one, i gave it to my Dad. He put it on a 7-08 and after 2 seasons it gave up the Ghost... Would not hold zero anymore. The paralax gives up on them although its fixed at 150. I sent the new one back to Korth, they fixed that one and i literally gave it to my cousin and said good luck.
Again i think the VX3's are good but they are still very light weight scopes. They get knocked off zero easy if they are treated rough. I hiked a VX3 for 70 days in the bluffs this year and it got bounced around a bit. I winged a buck and chased its blood trail in the snow for 2 days. When i checked it at the range it was out by 6 inches to the right. It never really took any hits that should have knocked it off. It was dialed at the start of the season. I wasnt very happy. I have a NF NXS 250 and it is unreal for durability. Ive dropped that scope hard and never thought for a second to check it. I knew it was still on zero. Im all about the Mil Spec ... Even on my lightweight mountain rifles im going to NF compacts or maybe one of the Compact Leupold MK4's.
Military boys run those 3.5-10 MK4's over with Humvees on there M24's and they hold Zero ... good enough for me
again , the nature of a fixed power leupold is nothing like there Variables .. Very durable
