Need advice , .22 enough for racoon ?

My last racoon kill was with my Ruger77/22mag shot it just behind the front upper leg/shoulder @ 50-55yards from my Upstairs bedroom window. The racoon walked 3 feet and fell over dead. Yotes took care of the rest. I don't see any problem with a .22Lr if place your shot well...! They (Coons) rip the sh_t out of my grass looking for grubs....

I thought it was skunks that tear up the grass for grubs .

My advice then, since you do have nighbours ... and a barn ...

Time to build a nice little shooting platform on the top of your barn (or silo if you are lucky enough to have one) ... plenty of line of sight, and with that kind of elevation, "beyond the target" should pretty much always be the ground. Then go get yourself a 223

:D

Great idea with the silo....only problem is I'm a chicken with heights :D

Save yourself a lot of trouble and get in touch with someone who owns some conibear traps and knows how to set them. Coons will stick their heads into almost anything. Instant kills and no worries about shooting noise attracting unwanted attention.

I'd also go with the 22 mag. rimfire. I think it's heavier bullets would be extra insurance on those large coons. I shoot a 17 HMR and took down a coyote with it but I felt that a 40 gr. bullet at 2100 f.p.s. would outperform a 20 gr. bullet at 2550 f.p.s. "Get enough gun" is a good excuse (reason)to get another rifle. That being said nothing wrong with a 22 lr. just keep your distances close, sight it in with a good low power scope and aim true.

The eyes part pisses me off Doug , I had perfect vision till I hit my 40's :(

Looking at a nice Ruger 10/22 that's listed local and comes with the rails to mount a scope . A 3x5 should be be suitable ? I want one big enough in diameter and good crosshairs . Honestly I don't know much about scopes , I wish my son (Red Dawg ) who lives in Edmonton was a bit closer , he's great at mounting and setting them up .

Any scope will do, but a better scope does it better. For value it is pretty hard to beat Bushnell, and there are lots of good used Bushnell scopes around for great prices. Obviously if a fellow wanted to pay more money he might choose higher quality optics, but you can surely buy a decent used scope for less than a hundred bucks. (And if nobody your way has one, please send me a note.)

You mean our vision gets worse as we age????? Hell, here I thought the world had gotten fuzzy and I blamed it on global warming:D

My choice, a 22 lr subsonic. They tend to not over-penetrate, they dump most of their energy in the critter, and the noise is wayyyy low.

BTW, I've often found that sub-sonics are deadlier than the hyper-velocity stuff, and in my .22's they tend to be more accurate. FWIW

It is ALL about bullet placement, kinda like "Is a 223 big enough to use for deer threads" , no matter how big, mean or mad a coon is , a bullet in the right spot is gonna kill it, no magic calibre to take care of it !!!!

I'm still in awe of the pug in blaze orange.

Gawd, I wouldn't even dream of turning my attack pug loose on a 'coon. There'd be nothing left of it, and I'd probably be charged with animal cruelty or crimes against nature. Pugs are the type of dog you just don't wanna get a blood lust going in them.
