Need advice- .308/300WM/7mm ?

After spending some time hunting in the Brookmere area last week (pics to come later), I was BS'ing with the guys at night, and they're talking me into a trip to PG next year to their happy moose hunting grounds.

The discussion went to what rifle I would be using.
I currently shoot a .308 Tikka T3 for deer/bear with 168 - 180 gr bullets.

They all shoot 300 winmag or 7mm. While they all agreed .308 is enough gun for a big moose with the heavier bullets, they also said it came down to how far you want the moose to walk after you shoot it.
So if I wanted to add something heavier to the safe for next year, what rifle/caliber combo would you go with?

Or, do I need anything more than what I have?
 
It is more important to put a good bullet in the rigth place than how fast you get the bullet there.

Use your .308 and spend the $$ on premium ammo and pracitce.
 
My buddy now shoots 308, I used to.

I have been party to 3 moose shot by a 308. All 3 put together they walked a combined 0 steps.

+1, I would take a whelen moose hunting long before I took a .300mag.

Warren, your .308 will be fine up here. I watched 2 moose get shot with a .308win last year. neither went more then 40yrds after getting hit. I wouldn't hessitate to shoot a 300yrd moose with a 308 & a good bullet.

Popcan your .308 will do just fine.........'lessin' ya wanna sell it :D
 
There is not one thing wrong with having a deer gun, and a Moose gun , and should you have 2 tags in your pack, take the big gun..:D And if you keep it at 30 cal. ie .308 win $ 300 win mag , your set if a reloader.
Or as stated below, the 7 mm rem mag is excellent, would sell the .308 in this case though, no need for it since the 7mm is great for both.

Also agree with above but...... if you absolutely want to buy another one, the 7MMRemMag would be my choice :dancingbanana:. If you already reload for 30cal, then maybe the 300winMag would be a more logical choice :confused: .

Nahh.. go with the 7mmRemMag, I have 2 mooses with it in 3 years and I really like the power and its flat shooting without hard kicking recoil.

i think its a good excuse to by a new t3 in 300 short. it will be as acurate as your 308 with more pop. i have a 300 wsm and 7 08 in t3. thinking of adding another one this winter.
 
I look at it this way as Gatehouse said "more ammo and practice".
Would you not feel good and put the guys to shame if you took a moose with your 308 and not fall to the pressures of magnumitis. But if you have the calling to buy a new shootin iron. Don't let us stop you.
 
I'm with Rembo, you NEED a .35 Whelen! My big rifle use to be my 7mm Rem Mag, now the 7mm is my long range rifle and the Whelen is my big rifle.:dancingbanana:
 
"...and cover anything you possibly can run into..." The .308 will do that with no fuss. There's no game in North America you need a magnum anything to kill with one well placed shot.

I'd like to see a .308 put a charging grizzly down as fast as a .338 will, something he could run into while hunting moose in certain areas of BC.

Since I'll be on a quad for much of the time up there, I'd have my trusty 12g along for good measure. I'm not going to be shooting at any Grizz with the .308 unless its all I have. ;)

Like you mentioned earlier Aaron, that Tikka is a pretty straight shootin' iron, so it's just a matter of getting the right bullets.

The reason I started this thread was because I didn't know if the 300 wm/7mm etc would nail a moose in its tracks - ie the guys were saying the moose would walk off a bit if only hit with the .308.

I think I'll stick with the Tikka. I love that gun! ......Not that there's anything wrong with having another hunting rifle.....:runaway:


Now the question is, what's your recommendation for a 180g factory load?

I've become quite patial to the Barnes TSX, and Federal offers a 165 grain bullet in their factory ammo. Now you said you wanted 180 grainers, but I think that TSX offering would be a super round on moose from your .308. If you really have to go with a 180 grain pill, they also offer Partitions and they are 180 grain bullets.:)
 
Another bullet that Federal offers is the Barnes MRX, I've never tried them but they are much like the TSX, but have a tungsten core at the rear, protected by the copper front, and a poly tip..........They're offered in a 180 grain selection. and would likely be a great choice as well.

Edit: According to the Federal ballistic tables the MRX, although a heavier bullet seems to be a flatter trajectory, but only a fraction of an inch diffence at 300 yards and a 200 yard zero. The 165 gr TSX comes in at 9 inches low at 300, and the 180 grain MRX is something like 8.7 inches low.
