We have nbeen having a steady increase of big cats and Grizzlies up here in the last ten years.
That doesn't mean I'm going to run out and buy a magnum, just because I may be hunting in grizzly country.
I hunted thhe Nordegg and country for a few years also, and was comfortable carrying what I owned , even with seeing Grizzlies there.
I'll not be buying something "just in case".
That's like using a repeater "just in case".
And , no, I am NOT an inexperienced greenhorn who has never been in close proximity to aggresive blacks or grizzlies.

I'm not worried about grizzlies waiting to pounce either... I mentioned it because one of the guys has in fact been chewed on up north, and that seems to be what is driving those guys to bigger guns. I'll be sticking with my .308.

I think the biggest risk of grizz is right in camp at night when you have game hanging. Then the shotguns come out.

I dont know about that, one of those single shot enfields in .577 would likely work pretty good on a bear...just in case and have more character than the 30/30 single shot i pack for hiking just cuz its easy.Seems like there are always temptations a person can talk themselves into buying. :dancingbanana: I can stop ,if i have too, i guess.. :)

Despite popular belief.........It is not true that there grizzly bears lurking behind every tree and shrub, waiting to POUNCE!!!:D :D
:runaway:  what say its not so :D

you know I think I need to get me a 30-06 and a 35 wheland just to round out my selection.

I'll need a little porter to carry around my hunting guns in an oversized golf bag for hunting :D

sort of like going on safari :D

3030

Before the hype of the "SUPER ULTRA POWER POINT SHOCK TRIPLE MAGNUM......" my Dad lived in the Northwest Territories. For a while, Far north of Baffin Island.

He brought back numerous things. Ivory carvings, a Narwhal tusk, and some guns that he bought and traded for with the Eskimos. Among them were the "Ptarmigan guns" a .22 cooey, and a .22 marlin
39A.

Then there was the big gun. Used for Walrus, seal, Polar Bear and Whale.
It was called a Marlin 336C. You may see it in a history book, or on the shoulder of guys who know how to hunt and shoot.

A 400 Yrd shot is for the range, In the field it says to me,"I can't get close enough, so I need a bigger gun" if you do shoot it at 400 hundred yards, you';re still gonna have to go get it, so why not go to it first and then shoot it!

I often heard, "well if ya shoot him in the shoulder you'll be sorry you didn't have a bigger gun"

Of course, That's why you don't shoot them in the shoulder.

PG moose

The moose at Prince George are not any tougher than the moose of Green Lake! It's been said so many times, a carefully aimed rifle that will put the bullet in his rib cage, is by far the most important element. If the rifle is in the 30-30 class, or larger, it means fresh meat on the table.
For some good historical info on the PG area, try this book.

It is more important to put a good bullet in the rigth place than how fast you get the bullet there.

Use your .308 and spend the $$ on premium ammo and pracitce.

Yup, that would work.

They will all take a moose.

You need to look at the situation you will hunt in the most and the type of rifle you want. Here they are in order of power 300 wm, 7mm rem mag, .308. Here they are in order of recoil .308, 7mm rm, 300 wm.

The .308 is a short action and recoils less therefore it can be chambered in a shorter, lighter and handier rifle. The 7mm rm and 300wm are long action and recoil more so the rifles that they are comfortably chambered in are not as handi as those in .308 but they shoot flatter and hit harder. So you need to decide what you want most but you really can't go wrong with any of these choices.

Hey popcan,

I'm not sure why all these guys are trying to hide the fact that the 300WM is the ultimate killing machine.......;)

Better grab one just to be sure....:D

Or, do I need anything more than what I have?

Lots of moose go to heaven every year with a .308. Your .308 would be fine, but I would be trying to rationalize my need/want of another caliber and I just know my want would win, however I would explain it to my wife as a need. If you have the means, go larger for moose.

come on guys...if popcan wants to buy another rifle...don't talk him out of it...we all know a 308 will kill moose,..but I think he NEEDS a 35 Whelen....:D

Come to think of it, I need a 35 Whelen!

I've become quite patial to the Barnes TSX, and Federal offers a 165 grain bullet in their factory ammo. Now you said you wanted 180 grainers, but I think that TSX offering would be a super round on moose from your .308. If you really have to go with a 180 grain pill, they also offer Partitions and they are 180 grain bullets.:)

Right on! and Right on on both counts! It is hard to arue with the reputation of the partition. On the 30 cal, 180 makes for a good sectional density needed for penetration, but with the TSX being pure copper I think that we might just have to change our thinking and I personally 165 is better!
