Need Advice For A Lady With A Coyote Problem

Is she cute?
I'm thinking lessons shooting yote's from the hay loft.
Set up a bait stand in line of the open loft.
Just think of the fun it would be.

x2 for the H&R single shot. Cheap as borscht and quite accurate. The triggers aren't great but useable without mods and only $286 @ Epps right now

Savage Axis youth model, the stock should fit her quite well, the rifle/scope package is inexpensive and they are surprisingly accurate. Either .223 or .22-250 would be ideal, the .223 has a little less "bark" if she is sensitive...

A .22lr is nowhere near enough for shots on coyotes past 100m; (even 100m is even debatable depending on who you talk to), and the OP stated shots could be as far as 350m, therefore I would suggest that a .223 or 22-250 would be a far better choice.

She needs a donkey. They are effective for protecting against coyotes. Just don't let your dogs get close to it either.........

They work great! Have one out during calving. If you keep them close to the yard for a time and introduce the "good" dogs they will know that those ones are ok and not stomp them into the ground. As to the question from the op - isn't the Remington Model Seven a smaller framed gun? Any 22 cal should work, maybe let them come in a little closer

Ruger 10-22 if all you want is coyote control. 22LR will kill coyotes at close range quite well.

I think you may get some pushback for the potential of underkill, similar to the argument of a 223 being able to kill a deer. Yes, it could, if shot placement is perfect, but it is better to make damn-sure that it's dead in a hurry than risking a long drawn-out painful death, or worst-case, dragging itself to where someone finds it and calls CBC and the SPCA to report someone for animal cruelty.

IMO, better to stick with 223-types of rounds. Even if you don't get a perfect hit (not always easy when they're darting around), they're still going to die pretty quickly.

If it's strictly a budget and physical size issue, I'd say Savage, followed by a Handi Rifle or a similar model from Rossi or whoever else makes them.

My Bud's Savage was never much to look at, but it was a frikken laser beam with everything that was shot through it in the gopher patch!

The Handi Rifles always seemed a bit cruder than they needed to be, but are plenty cheap too.

Might be a good time to ask, but does she actually see the coyotes on a regular basis? Because my money is on getting maybe two shots at them before they completely change strategy's around her place, and go nocturnal. Talking with a trapper may be a better idea. Gonna depend a lot on whether there are a lot of dogs in the area too.

Lotsa things to ponder, but if it's gonna be a gun, hard to go wrong with anything that will shoot straight. Any used around?

Cheers

A 22mag and limit shooting distance would be my choice. Fairly quiet, fairly cheap and very light recoil.

She's new, I really don't see 350yd shots.

I just talked to her and she has been looking around her property, and a shot at 200 to 250 yards is more likely a more realistic distance.
She is going to borrow a range finder and check it out.

I just bought a Savage Axis in 22-250. Shots fast, far and flat. she's a wee bit on the loud side but its not like a coyote is going to stick around for multiple shots.

556/ 233 far more economical and available.

It definitely is but I'm not putting 100 rounds down the pipe every weekend. I'll go yote hunting 3-4 times a year and coupled with a few range visits the gun will see maybe 75 shots a year. So price isn't a huge issue. The availability factor is the sticker. I've been lucky enough to find quality factory ammo readily available, think Hornady VMax 50 grains. Buy myself 4-5 boxes and I am good for the year.
